Tony Mantell

Tony graduated from Portsmouth Notre Dame High School in 1972. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in education from Ohio University in 1977 and completed his Master's of Educational Leadership degree from the University of Dayton in 1988. He has since completed numerous graduate courses in education and educational leadership at the University of Dayton as well as Ohio University.

Tony began his career as a teacher and coach at Portsmouth Notre Dame High School in 1977. In addition to his teaching duties, he was an assistant varsity football coach, junior varsity basketball coach and head baseball coach.

In 1979 he began teaching at Northwest High School in Scioto County. He was the head varsity football coach for seven years and worked as the head girls track and field coach for 11 seasons.

His career as an administrator began in 1990 when he was named the assistant middle school principal in the Minford Local School District. After serving one year at Minford, Tony became the middle school principal in the Wheelersburg Local School District, where he served for five years. In 1996 Tony became the high school principal in the New Boston Local School District and he worked there until becoming the superintendent at Clay Local, where has served for nearly 11 years.

Tony has served on the OHSAA's Southeast District Athletic Board since February of 2006. He has also served on the association's Review Committee from 2008 until 2010. This is his first term on the OHSAA Board of Directors.

Tony resides in Wheelersburg with his wife Theresa. They have four grown children, sons Jason and Brian Mantell and daughters Erin Sutton and Allison Mantell. They are also proud grandparents of Katelyn (5), Braden (4), and Macy (2) Mantell.



John Ault

John is a graduate of Louisville High School. He served two years in the U.S. Army including nine months in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal.

After graduating from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education, John began his career as a junior high school science and social studies teacher at Louisville Junior High School. After two years, he moved to United Local Schools in Hanoverton, where he taught junior high math, science and language arts. He also coached junior high football, volleyball and track and field. John was athletic director at United for 11 years.

John accepted his current position as athletic administrator at West Branch High School in Beloit in 2008. He was elected to the Northeast District Athletic Board as a Class AA representative the same year. He has also been a member of the Northeast Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Executive Committee and the Tri-County Area Athletic Directors Group. This is John's first term as a member of the Board of Directors.

John is single and resides in Salem.

 

Bill Axe

Bill is a 1969 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University in 1973 and earned a master’s degree in education from Wright State University in 1979 and education specialist certification from the University of Toledo in 1999.

An educator for 38 years, Bill has spent 34 years as an athletic administrator, 19 years as a baseball, basketball and golf coach and 22 years as an assistant principal. He has been at Central Catholic since 1978, serving as the head boys basketball coach, an English teacher and the yearbook moderator through 1992. He added ath- letic administrator duties in 1987 and was promoted to assistant principal in 1992 when he gave up his coaching, teaching and yearbook duties. Prior to joining Central Catholic, Bill held various coaching and teaching positions at Lancaster Fairfield Union (1972-73), St. Marys Memorial (1973-74), Minster (1974-77) and Genoa Area (1977-78) high schools.

Bill has been a member of the OHSAA’s Northwest District Athletic Board since 1999, is past president of the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (OIAAA) and served on the OIAAA Executive Board for several years. This is his first term on the OHSAA Board of Directors, although he represented the OIAAA as an ex-officio member of the OHSAA Board during the 1999-2000 and 2000-01 school years. During that time he also served as a member of a committee to study the OHSAA’s constitution and bylaws.

Bill and his wife Kim reside in Toledo. They have two sons, Bill Jr. (BJ), 21, who resides and works in Toledo, and Caleb, 18, a freshman at Ohio Wesleyan University.



Ron Bond

Ron is a 1974 graduate of Indian Valley South High School in Gnadenhutten. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Kent State University in 1980 and his master’s degree in educational administration from Ashland University in 1993.

He began his teaching and coaching career in 1980 at Dover Middle School, where he taught sixth and seventh grade. During that time he coached boys and girls cross country, boys basketball and boys and girls track and field. In 1993, Ron was named the assistant principal/athletic administrator of Dover Middle School. He held that position until 2008, when he assumed the principal’s position.

Ron was elected to the OHSAA’s East District Athletic Board in 2007 as the 7th-8th grade representative. In 2009, he was selected as the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (OIAAA) and the East OIAAA Middle School Athletic Administrator of the Year. This is his second term on the OHSAA Board of Directors after serving a two-year term in 2000-2002 as the state representative for the 7th-8th grades.

Ron lives in Dover with his wife Barb, a school nurse in the West Lafayette Ridgewood School District. Together, they have three grown children, Erin (husband Troy), an 8th grade math teacher in Dover; Ryan (wife Katie), a fourth grade teacher in Delta, Colo., and Randy, a veterinary student at The Ohio State University. Three grandchildren, Claire, Ethan and Emma, complete the family.
 

Tom Farbizo

Tom is a 1963 graduate of New Philadelphia High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1967 from the Ohio State University and a C.B.A. degree from Capital University graduate school in 1994.

Tom began his career in education as a physical education teacher in 1966 at the State of Ohio School for the Blind, where he was also the varsity wrestling coach. He was a special education teacher at Canton South High School from 1967 to 1968. Between 1968 and 1972, Tom was a high school health/first aid teacher, sophomore English teacher and an assistant football coach at Strasburg High School. He implemented a weight and conditioning program while employed at Strasburg. During the summers, he worked as a parks and recreation assistant for the city of New Philadelphia. From 1973 to 1986, Tom was employed in private industry.

In 1986, he reentered the educational field and was an adult instructor of a small business management program at Massillon Jackson High School between 1986 and 1991 and at Buckeye Career Center and Coshocton Career Center from 1991 to 1994. In 1994, he was hired as an assistant faculty member at Kent State University-Tuscarawas and Belmont Technical College. From 1998 to 1999, Tom became the special assistant to the major in economic development for the city of New Philadelphia. He accepted the position as athletic director for the New Philadelphia school system and began his new duties January 2000.

Tom was elected to the East District Athletic Board in 2003 and was reelected in 2007. This is Tom's second term on the OHSAA Board of Directors. He served as the OIAAA ex-officio representative to the board during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school years. Currently, Tom is the president of the OIAAA and has received numerous athletic awards on the local, state and national levels.

Tom resides in New Philadelphia with his wife Judy, who is a sales representative for Newton Manufacturing Company. Tom's children include Amanda, Mike, Chris and daughter-in-law Tina and his grandchildren are Calya and Cole.


Mark Hughes

Mark graduated from Gahanna Lincoln High School in 1978. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1982, and a Master of Education degree in sports administration from Ashland University in 1987.

Mark began his teaching career at Willard High School in 1982. While there, he coached golf and baseball. In 1985, Mark returned to Gahanna Lincoln as a high school teacher, assistant athletic administrator and softball coach, and he was named the school’s athletic administrator in 1990. He earned his Certified Athletic Administrators (CAA) certification in 1994.

In 1995, Mark became the director of athletics and student activities at Oakwood High School in Dayton. He is a member of the Southwest Ohio Athletic Administrators Association (SWOADA), the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (OIAAA) and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). He was elected to the OHSAA’s Southwest District Athletic Board in 2006 and was reelected in 2008, serving as that board’s president during the 2008-09 school year. This is his first term on the OHSAA Board of Directors.

Mark and his wife Betty reside in Oakwood with their two children, Maya, 20, a junior at The Ohio State University, and Mason, 18, a freshman at The Ohio State University.


Troy McIntosh

Troy graduated from Canton McKinley Senior High School in 1987. He received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Wheaton College (Ill.) in 1991 and a master’s degree in education from The Ohio State University in 1994. He has completed additional graduate work at Columbia International University.

Troy began his educational career after a brief stint working on staff at the Ohio General Assembly. He has been at Worthington Christian Schools since 1994, serving as a teacher and moving to principal in 1998 before being promoted to assistant superintendent in 2004. He also had coaching stints at the school as the head coach of the varsity softball, varsity boys tennis and the middle school golf teams. He has served as site manager for numerous OHSAA district basketball and volleyball tournaments. He has represented Class A schools on the Central District Board since 2006. This is his first term on the OHSAA Board of Directors.

Troy and his wife Julie live in Westerville with their three daughters, all of whom attend Worthington Christian Schools.
 

Jenny Penn

Jenny is a 1973 graduate of Lynchburg-Clay High School. She attended Morehead State University in Kentucky, where she received both her bachelor's degree and a Master of Science degree in health, physical education and recreation. Jenny's entire teaching career of 33 years has been with the Western Local School District in Latham.

Over the years, Penn has coached varsity volleyball, basketball, and track and field. For the past 25 years, she has held the position of athletic administrator at Western High School. Jenny has served on the OHSAA Commissioner's Liaison Committee for girls sports under the guidance of former OHSAA Commissioner Richard Armstrong. She has also served on the Southern Hills Athletic Conference Administrative Board. Currently, Jenny is a committee member of the SOuthern Ohio Conference, representing Western High, and is a member of the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (OIAAA) and the Southeast OIAAA. In 2006, she was inducted into the OIAAA Hall of Fame.

In 2007, Jenny was elected as the female representative for the Southeast District Athletic Board. This is her first term as a member of the OHSAA Board of Directors.

At Western, Penn founded Heart of Western, which is a drug-free organization of high school students who mentor elementary school students. She also is a lead mentor in the Resident Educator Program as well as Student Council Advisor.

Jenny resides in Hillsboro with her husband of 30 years, Tim. She has two daughters, Tara (Rich) Power and Ashley Penn, and a grandson, Kash.


Phil Stevens

Phil is a 1979 graduate of Cleveland John Adams High School. He earned a bache- lor’s degree in education from Central State University in 1983 and a master’s degree in educational leadership administration from Ashland University in 1988.

A 29-year educator, Phil began his career in 1984 with the Cleveland Municipal School District as a teacher and coach. He moved to the Cleveland Heights/University Heights School District the following year to begin a 13-year stint. While there, he taught and coached before also serving as middle school athletic administrator from 1990 to 1998. During that period he also spent time as a freshman and varsity basketball coach at Bedford High School. Phil was appointed district athletic administrator and student activity coordinator for the Warrensville Heights City Schools, where he has served since 1998.

This is Phil’s second term on the OHSAA Board of Directors after serving as the ethnic minority representative during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 school years. He was elected to the Northeast District Athletic Board in 2005 and was that board’s president during the 2010-11 school year. He also has been a registered OHSAA football and basketball official since 1991 and has been an active member of the OHSAA Diversity Committee and the Northeast Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association

Phil resides in Bedford Heights, where he has been a member of the school board of the Bedford City Schools since 2010 and is currently the board’s president. He and his wife, Barretta, have two children, Phil Jr., a 2011 graduate of Bedford High, and Kristen, who attends Cleveland State University.


Tim Erickson

Tim is a 1980 graduate of West Catholic High School in Grand Rapids, Mich. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and sports medicine from Iowa State University in 1985, and he graduated from Ohio University with a master’s degree in education in 1989.

He began his career as an athletic trainer in 1985 in the Seattle Mariners’ minor league system. In 1986 he worked with the Salinas Spurs and was selected as the trainer for the California League All-Star Team. In 1987 he was with the Wausau Timbers of the Midwest League, where he again was named as the All-Star Game trainer.

After graduate school, Tim worked as an athletic trainer at Ferris State University until 1991 before serving the next year as athletic trainer and travel coordinator for the men’s basketball team at the University of Toledo.

Tim was hired as the athletic administrator for the Ottawa Hills Local Schools, where he has served since 1993. He has twice been elected president of the Toledo Area Athletic Conference and has been an active member of the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, where he serves on the executive committee and is currently the president-elect.
Tim resides in Toledo with his son Nathaniel.


Tom Rutan

Tom’s appointment by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors began in May 2011. Since January 2006, he has served as an associate director in the Office of Curriculum and Instruction at the Ohio Department of Education and has responsibility for social studies, fine arts, foreign languages and physical education. Tom also serves as the point person for financial literacy for the agency and for credit flexibility, and he serves as state commissioner for the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunities for Military Children.

A 1961 graduate of Mechanicsburg High School, Tom earned his bachelor’s degree from Capital University (1965) and his master’s from The Ohio State University (1968) in social studies education. He also completed coursework at the University of Maryland, the University of Minnesota and Ashland University. He was a national speaker-presenter for Jostens Renaissance Program for seven years and served on the National Renaissance Advisory Board. He is an inductee of the Capital University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Before joining the Department of Education, Tom was president of Junior Achievement of Central Ohio for six years following a three-year stint as executive director of the Ohio Business Week Foundation. He retired in 1996 after serving 13 years as principal of Grove City High School and was selected as Ohio’s Secondary School Administrator- of-the-Year in 1991. He was previously a member of the OHSAA’s Central District Athletic Board and had a two-year stint on the OHSAA Board of Directors, serving as president during the 1992-93 school year.

A history teacher by trade, he also served as head baseball and assistant football coach at Upper Arlington High School, head football coach at Thomas Worthington High School and director of athletics at Galloway Westland High School. Tom refereed boys high school basketball for 17 years, including four state tournament assignments, and also officiated men’s college games for 11 years. He was selected to coach in both the Ohio East-West Baseball Series (1973) and the Ohio North-South All-Star Football Game (1978).

Tom and wife Nancy reside in Grove City and have three grown daughters, Robin, Lori (Shawn Green) and Susan, and four grandchildren.
