OHSAA Board of
Directors Update – January 14, 2010

The Board of Directors
of the Ohio High School Athletic Association held its regularly
scheduled January meeting Thursday at the OHSAA office in Columbus.
The following are highlights of the meeting proceedings. The
complete set of minutes will be posted at ohsaa.org in the coming
weeks.
- Commissioner Ross announced that additional proposed referendum
items will be presented to the Board in February to be added to the
11 proposed referendum items that the Board approved in December.
Member schools will vote on the items in May. The 11 items already
approved for a referendum vote can be found at ohsaa.org in the
highlights of the Board’s December meeting.
- The Golf Coaches
Association presented two proposals. First, in conjunction with the
fall sports of cross country, golf, volleyball, soccer, girls tennis
and field hockey, the start date for practice shall annually be the
first Monday of August. The Board will vote on that proposal during
its February meeting. Second, the Golf Coaches Association proposed
that regular-season competition be permitted beginning four days
after the start of practice. Currently, competition may begin seven
days after the start of practice. The Board will vote on that
proposal in April.
- The Tennis Coaches
Association made one proposal, that being for the draw and seeding
date for the boys and girls sectional tournament be held one week
prior to the start of each respective sectional and not on a Sunday.
Currently, the draw and seeding date in boys tennis is scheduled for
Sunday, May 2. The draw and seeding date in girls tennis for the
2009 season was Sunday, Sept. 27. The Board will vote on that
proposal in April.
- The Volleyball Coaches
Association made four proposals. First, as mentioned by the Golf
Coaches Association, that the annual start date for practice be
moved to the first Monday of August. The Board will vote on that in
February. Second, that the volleyball Foundation Match be allowed
any time from the first Monday in August through the last Saturday
of the regular season. Third, that the official OHSAA tournament
ball shall be a black/white/gray Molten ball with OHSAA, NFHS and
OHSVCA logos. And fourth, that the school name and/or mascot be
permitted along the top and/or bottom of the net. The Board will
vote on the second, third and fourth proposals in April.
- The Field Hockey Coaches
Association made two proposals. First, to revise regulation 1.1 to
allow players to be permitted to play in a maximum of two games per
day up to a maximum of three halves per day per common opponent with
a total of 38 halves (instead of 32) for the season. And second, to
approve the provision in NFHS Rule 4-2-2, which permits a “mercy
rule” by State Association Adoption. The Board will vote on the two
proposals in April.
- The financial reports for
the 2009 regional and state track and field tournament were
presented. The Board was pleased to see that attendance at the state
tournament increased by 2,755 people to a two-day total of 26,769.
Including regional and state tournaments and other track and field
tournament expenses, the tournament had an overall deficit of
$82,182.
- The start times for the ice
hockey state tournament contests at Nationwide Arena were announced.
The semifinals on Saturday, March 13 will be at 11 a.m. (Brooklyn
District winner vs. Kent District winner) and 1 p.m. (Sylvania
District winner vs. Columbus District winner), while the
championship game will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 14.
