OHSAA Board of Directors Update – February 19, 2010

The Board of Directors of the Ohio High School Athletic Association met Thursday in Columbus for its regularly scheduled February meeting. The following are highlights of action taken by the Board. The complete set of minutes will be posted at OHSAA.org in the coming weeks.

-       The Board approved a common start date proposal from the coaches associations of the fall sports except football that in 2011 practice for fall sports may begin on the first Monday in August. In 2011, that date is Monday, August 1. (This ruling applies to the OHSAA’s fall sports of boys and girls golf, girls tennis, field hockey, boys and girls cross country, volleyball, and boys and girls soccer, but not football.) The start dates for practice in the fall of 2010 will remain as adopted previously by the Board.

-       The Board approved a proposal from the golf coaches association, which asked that golf competitions may begin on the Friday of the first week of the season instead of the following Monday. In 2010, that date is Friday, August 6. Practice may begin Monday, August 2 as approved by the Board in August 2009.

-       The Board recognized that Norm Persin, from Oak Hill High School, has been named the 2009 National Boys Basketball Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). In addition, seven other Ohio coaches were named NFHS Section 2 Coach of the Year. Please visit OHSAA.org for the complete release, which also includes the Ohio coaches of the year for 2009. The complete list of proposed referendum items will be posted at OHSAA.org in the near future for review by the membership prior to the discussion meetings that the OHSAA staff conducts around the state in late April.

Those individuals include Lori Powers-Basinger in gymnastics, Gary Wilkins in ice hockey, Don Muenz in soccer, Jerry Fick in softball, Ken Gipe in swimming & diving, Diane Plas in volleyball, Jim Vreeland in wrestling, Bruce Maurer in football, Dennis Morris in basketball, Kyle McNeely in baseball, Dale Gabor in track & field, and Bill Gardiner in field hockey.

-       The Board announced that Larry Larson, a longtime coach and athletic director and currently of 610 WTVN in Columbus, has been selected as the OHSAA’s 2010 Ethics and Integrity Award Recipient. Mr. Larson will be honored at the OHSAA’s annual scholar-athlete banquet in June.

-       The Board approved tournament regulations in the spring sports of baseball, softball and boys tennis and conducted the regional and state tournament draws in baseball and softball. Those regulations and pairings will be posted at OHSAA.org.

-       The Board approved a proposal from the volleyball coaches association to adopt a new Molten game ball for OHSAA tournaments beginning in 2010 that includes white, silver and black panels.

-       The Board extended contracts with HomeTeam Marketing, which handles the OHSAA’s corporate partnerships, and Rawlings to serve as the official basketball of the OHSAA tournaments.
