State Tournament Recaps

Girls Division I
Mason Adds Second Straight Swimming and Diving State Title
CANTON, Ohio- Mason defended its title and went home with the 2019 OHSAA Girls Division I Swimming and Diving State Championship Saturday at C.T. Branin Natatorium.
 
The Comets finished the meet with a total score of 204.
 
Mason started off with a second-place win in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:42.07. Senior Leanna Wall added a third-place finish in the 200 yard freestyle (1:48.48).
 
Sophomore Reese Lugbill aided with another third-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:02.92).
 
Mason had several more top three finishes in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, and 100 yard breaststroke.
 
By just mere points, North Canton Hoover finished as state runner-up with a score of 201. Hoover placed first in the 200 yard medley relay as the team of senior Caitlin Cronin, sophomore Maya Lewis, senior Parker Timken and senior Caroline Ehlers broke the state tournament record, state record and the pool record with a time of 1:41.02.
 
Hoover had four top three finishes during the tournament, with three of the four being first place finishers.
 
Senior Morgan Southhall of Cincinnati West Clermont won the girls diving competition with a score of 479.55.
 
Boys Division I
Cincinnati St. Xavier Wins 11th Straight Swimming and Diving State Title
CANTON, Ohio- Cincinnati St. Xavier preserved its title winning the 2019 OHSAA Boys Division I Swimming and Diving State Championship Saturday at C.T. Branin Natatorium having a total score of 310. It was the school’s 11th straight championship and upped its state-best swimming and diving titles to 40 overall.
 
The Bombers placed second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:28.94) with the team of junior Nate Buse, junior Scott Sobolewski, junior Jean-Pierre Khouzam and sophomore Owen Taylor.
 
The Bombers had two first place finishers in the 100-yard butterfly (47.21) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:22.69). The Bombers also had two second-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle (4:25.94) and in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.25).
 
St. Xavier finished the night with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:01.79) with the team of JP Khouzam, Sobolewski, junior Ian Van Gorp and Jean-Pierre Khouzam.
 
Cincinnati Sycamore finished in second place with 240 points.
 
Junior Carson Foster of Sycamore broke the national record, state tournament record, state record and pool record in the 200-yard freestyle finals with a time of 1:32.99. Senior Jake Foster broke the state tournament, state and pool record in the 200-individual medley with a time of 1:43.99. The Aviators broke the state tournament record and state record in the boys Div. I 200-yard medley relay final with a time of 1:28.48. Sycamore finished with five top-five finishes.
 
Senior Lyle Yost of Shaker Heights won first place for the third year in a row in the diving competition. Yost scored 571.20.
 
 
Girls Division II
Gates Mills Hawken Claims 21st-Consecutive Girls State Swimming Title
CANTON, Ohio- Gates Mills Hawken defended its title winning the 2019 OHSAA Girls Division II Swimming and Diving State Championship Saturday at C.T. Branin Natatorium.
 
The Hawks finished the meet with 10 top-five finishes and a total score of 378.
 
Hawken started off strong with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:42.35) with the team of freshman Jessica Eden, sophomore Sydney Bare, senior Abby Hay and senior Audrey Dietz. Sophomore Claire Pophal came in fourth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.72, while freshman Tori Culotta trailed her with a fifth-place finish (1.52.22). Sophomore Ella Gilson wasn’t far behind in eighth with a time of 1:54.51.
 
Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown finished second for the second consecutive year with a score of 167.5. The Blazers had a pair of top-three finishes, with one of those being from sophomore Mairin O’Brien, who came in second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.76.
 
For the second consecutive year, senior Janie Boyle of Pepper Pike Orange claimed the girls Division II Diving competition with a state record score of 483.70.
 
 
Boys Division II
Hunting Valley University School Captures Second Consecutive State Title
CANTON, Ohio- Hunting Valley University School defended its title claiming the 2019 OHSAA Boys Division II Swimming and Diving State Championship Saturday at C.T. Branin Natatorium.
 
University School obtained three first-place finishes and three other top-three finishes. One first-place finish came from the team of junior Nicolas Tekieli, senior Cal Ritzmann, junior Frank Applebaum and senior Will Zhang in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:33.32.
 
Also aiding the Preppers was the team of senior Owen Hanna, senior Jeffrey Chi, Zhang and senior Ethan Banks, who finished first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:26.16. Banks went on to finish third in the 200 freestyle (1:41.16). The Preppers finished with a total score of 331.
 
Gates Mills Hawken finished second with a total score of 212. The Hawks had three top-three finishes in the 500 freestyle (4:38.54), 100 backstroke (48.40) and 400 freestyle relay (3:07.97).
 
Senior Ilya Gerasimchuk of Cincinnati Wyoming won the diving competition with a score of 452.90.
