REVIEW: 27th Annual State Ice Hockey Tournament, Mar. 6 and
7, 2004, Nationwide Arena, Columbus.
The same two schools that met for the past two state championships met for the
rubber match in 2004, and Lakewood St. Edward (32-8-2) had little trouble with Hunting
Valley University School as it captured an 8-0 victory. The victory margin was the largest
for a state title game, and St. Edward became the first school in the state tournament to
post shutouts in the semifinals and finals. The win also upped the Eagles’ lead in
all-time Ohio state hockey championships to nine.
Junior forward Brian Koney, junior forward Matt Switaj and senior forward David
Bruder each had two goals for the Eagles, while Switaj and senior defenseman Zack Galia
each had three assists and junior goalie Charles Long had 24 saves. St. Edward had
defeated University School in all four of its previous matchups this year but three of the
contests were decided by one goal and one was decided by two.
In the semifinals, St. Edward outshot state tournament newcomer Oxford Talawanda
43-6 but could not shake the Braves until it scored four third-period goals en route to a
5-0 victory. Junior forward Evan Krysa had two goals for the Eagles, while Talwanda senior
Matt DiPaolo stopped 38 shots on goal. University School senior forward Larry Germovsek
broke a 3-all tie with a goal with 10:25 left in the game and added an empty net goal as
time expired to lead the Preppers to a 4-2 win over Bowling Green. It marked the fifth
straight year the Bobcats had lost in the state semifinals.
