91st Annual OHSAA Boys State Tennis Tournaments
Central Ohio players claim all four titles

COLUMBUS, Ohio Two former doubles champions became singles champions, two doubles teams from the same school squared off for a title and another doubles team added to its school's illustrious tennis history Saturday afternoon at the 2010 OHSAA Boys State Tennis Tournament at the Stickney Tennis Center on the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus.

After outlasting Liberty Twp. Lakota East sophomore Zack Mueck 11-9 in a first-set tiebreaker, Worthington Kilbourne senior Kevin Metka went on to post a 7-6 (11-9), 6-3 victory in the Div. I singles final. It marks the second state tennis championship for the lefty, who was part of the Div. I doubles championship team a year ago.

Columbus Bishop Watterson junior Chris Diaz, a Div. I doubles champion two years ago and a doubles runner-up in 2009, cruised through the Div. II singles field without dropping a set in any of his four matches. Diaz bested defending Div. II singles champion Joey Fritz, a senior from Cincinnati Country Day, 6-3, 6-2 in the final.

Upper Arlington added its state-best 15th doubles championship, and first since 1999, to its trophy collection when junior Billy Weldon and freshman Stu Little beat New Albany senior Riyad Bennoui and junior John Hendrix in the Div. I doubles final 6-4, 6-1.

For only the 10th time in the 91-year history of the boys state tennis tournaments, a pair of doubles teams from the same school matched up against each other in the final when senior Andrew Enslen and sophomore Chad Buchanan played senior Eoghan Bahnson and sophomore Langston Hughes, all from Gahanna Columbus Academy. Enslen and Buchanan topped their teammates 6-3, 6-4.

The finals had a distinctive Central Ohio flavor as every gold medal awarded went around the necks of players from Columbus-area schools. Complete results can be found below.
