Sidney Lehman Catholic
defeats New Philadelphia Tuscarawas Central Catholic 3-0 (25-15, 25-9,
25-14)
DAYTON, Ohio � Second-ranked Sidney Lehman Catholic rolled past
fourth-ranked New Philadelphia Tuscarawas Central Catholic, 3-0 (25-15,
25-9, 25-14) Saturday to win the OHSAA Division IV state volleyball
championship at the Ervin J. Nutter Center at Wright State University.
The state title is the third for Lehman Catholic (2000, 2005), which
dropped its opening match of the season to defending Division IV state
champion Maria Stein Marion Local before reeling off 29 consecutive wins
on its way to the state crown.
In Lehman Catholic�s eight postseason wins � one of which came in a
rematch with Marion Local in the regional final � the Cavaliers (29-1)
dropped only two sets (24-2).
Lehman Catholic dominated at the net, allowing TCC (26-2) only 14 kills
and forcing 22 attack errors. The Cavaliers, meanwhile, amassed 45 kills
and committed only 13 attack errors.
Lehman Catholic junior Morgan Schmitmeyer totaled 14 kills, while senior
Jessica Thobe had 13 kills. Sophomore Andrea Thobe collected 38 assists.

Middletown Bishop Fenwick
defeats Gates Mills Gilmour Academy 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 27-25, 25-16)
DAYTON, Ohio � Middletown Bishop Fenwick won a pivotal third set
that featured 10 ties or lead changes, and the second-ranked Falcons
went on to top fifth-ranked Gates Mills Gilmour Academy 3-1 (25-19,
20-25, 27-25, 25-16) Saturday to capture the OHSAA Division III
volleyball state championship at Wright State University�s Ervin J.
Nutter Center.
The title is the first for Fenwick (28-1) in its third trip to the state
tournament. Gilmour Academy (24-5) has earned a state runner-up finish
in two of the last three years.
Senior Alyssa Beck led Fenwick with 23 kills, while junior Casey Volz
added 10. Senior Chelsea Byrge totaled 31 assists.
Gilmour Academy totaled 12 team blocks in the match and was led by
senior Brittany Link, who totaled 17 kills, 17 assists and 17 digs.

Mentor Lake Catholic Defeats
Sunbury Big Walnut 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 26-24, 25-23)
DAYTON, Ohio � Second-ranked Mentor Lake Catholic edged out
fifth-ranked Sunbury Big Walnut, 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 26-24, 25-23)
Saturday in the OHSAA Division II volleyball state championship match at
the Ervin J. Nutter Center on the campus of Wright State University.
The state title is the first for Lake Catholic (25-2), which was the
state runner-up last year. The Lady Cougars totaled 90 kills and eight
total blocks on their way to denying Big Walnut (23-5) its first title.
Lake Catholic saw six players collect five or more kills, led by
freshman Abby Detering with 11 and junior Bridget Wilhelm with 10.
This marked the Lady Cougar�s fourth trip to the state tournament, while
Big Walnut made its sixth appearance and is the state runner-up for the
second time (1991).

Toledo St. Ursula Defeats
Dublin Coffman 3-1 (15-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-18)
DAYTON, Ohio � In its seventh trip to the OHSAA state volleyball
tournament since 2000, second-ranked Toledo St. Ursula Academy claimed
its second state title, winning the Division I state championship, 3-1
(15-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-18) over third-ranked Dublin Coffman Saturday
at Wright State University�s Ervin. J. Nutter Center.
St. Ursula (28-1) also won it all in 2004, while Coffman (27-2) takes
home the runner-up trophy for the second-consecutive year.
Coffman had a fast start, winning the first set by 10 points behind 20
kills and only two attack errors. But St. Ursula took control soon
thereafter and won the pivotal third set, which included 13 ties or lead
changes.
Four St. Ursula players had 10 or more kills, including junior Erin
Williams with 15, senior Maggie Burnham with 12, sophomore Maddie
Burnham with 10 and junior Cassidy Croci with 10. Senior Veronica
Zimmerman collected 37 assists and six aces.
