OHSAA Board of
Directors Update – September 8, 2011
COLUMBUS, Ohio –
The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of
Directors met Thursday morning in Columbus for its September
meeting. The following are highlights from the meeting. The complete
set of meeting minutes will be posted at OHSAA.org at a later date.

The Board finalized and approved the
contract with National Trail Raceway in Hebron to host the OHSAA
cross country state finals beginning in 2011. During its August
meeting, the Board approved the move of the state finals to
National Trail from Scioto Downs Racetrack in Columbus and the
contract with National Trail was then finalized during the past
several weeks.

The Ohio Association of Track and
Cross Country Coaches submitted a proposal to add the triple
jump to the state tournament. The Board will review the proposal
and is expected to vote at its December meeting.

Six member schools were recently
penalized for various infractions. The list of infractions and
penalties will be included in the complete meeting minutes
posted at OHSAA.org, but media members may obtain the list
sooner by contacting Tim Stried, OHSAA Director of Information
Services, at

The Board presented its goals for
the 2011-12 school year. Among the goals is to support the work
of OHSAA committees that will be formed to address competitive
balance (creating a new system for division assignment),
Division I (the large gap in enrollment between the smallest and
largest schools within the division) and post-season/summer
activities (off-season coaching regulations).

The spring sports regional and state
tournament financial reports were presented to the Board. The
baseball tournaments operated at a $15,155 loss, with a total
attendance of 27,064 (12,558 for the state tournament at
Huntington Park in Columbus). The softball tournaments operated
at a $4,629 loss, with a total attendance of 20,015 (8,292 for
state tournament at Akron Firestone Stadium). The track and
field tournaments produced a $14,446 profit, with a total
attendance of 53,517 (26,097 for the state tournament at Ohio
State University’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium). The boys
tennis tournaments operated at a $5,478 loss, with a total
attendance of 1,090 (state tournament only).

Three appointees to fill vacancies
on District Athletic Boards were approved, including Dan Adams,
athletic director at New Concord John Glenn High School, in the
East District, and two in the Southwest District, including Joy
Manning, assistant athletic director at Kettering Fairmont High
School, and Jonas Smith, athletic director for Dayton Public
Schools.

The 2011-12 OHSAA Media Regulations
and tournament broadcast fees were approved by the Board and are
posted on the ‘News & Media’ page at OHSAA.org.

The Elysium Tennis Center in Plain
City was approved as the indoor facility for the girls tennis
state tournament if inclement weather forces play to be moved
from the Stickney Tennis Center at Ohio State University.
