OHSAA Board of
Directors Update –
September 10, 2009
The Ohio High
School Athletic Association Board of Directors met Thursday at the
OHSAA office in Columbus for its regularly scheduled September
meeting. The following are highlights of Board action. Complete
minutes will be posted at ohsaa.org in the coming days.

The Board approved the OHSAA staff to implement the use of a video
replay system at the state basketball tournament as approved by
rules adopted by the National Federation of State High School
Associations. Details and procedures will be finalized in the coming
months.

The Board approved the appointment of three persons to fill
unexpired vacancies on District Athletic Boards through the 2009-10
school year. The three appointees include Jim Hayes (athletic
director, Teays Valley H.S.) as the Class AA representative in the
Central District, Richard Hall (superintendent, East Guernsey Local
School District) as the Class AA representative in the East District
and Karen O’Hare (principal, Creston Middle School) as the junior
high representative in the Northeast District.

The Board approved the 2009-10 OHSAA Media Regulations. The 12-page
document is posted in PDF format on the OHSAA website under the
‘News & Media’ tab.

The Board heard from Greg Fraunfelter of the Ohio Association of
Track and Cross Country Coaches regarding proposals to modify the
shot put weight for 7th and 8th graders (six pounds for girls and
four kilograms for boys) and to require pole vault education
recertification for coaches. The Board will vote on the proposals at
its December meeting.

The list of 2008-09 Harold A. Meyer Award recipients was provided to
the Board. The 55 high schools and 12 junior high schools that have
been honored will be announced in a separate release from the OHSAA.

Impact Action Sports Photography was approved to continue as the
OHSAA’s official state tournament photographer for the 2009-10
school year.

The Board received the 2009 spring sports financial reports from the
OHSAA staff and was pleased to see that attendance was up 32-percent
at the baseball state tournament at Huntington Park in Columbus and
attendance was up 15-percent at the softball state tournament at
Akron Firestone Stadium.
