A partnership between
the Ayersville and Tinora schools districts and the
Defiance Lions Club yielded a busload of food for
needy Defiance County families.
In connection with the
Ayersville and Tinora high school football game held
Friday, the groups worked together to collect
nonperishable food items from students and fans who
attended the game.
According to Lions
Club member Ken Wenner, the effort was a huge
success.
"It went well beyond
our expectations. We estimate that we collected
4,000 to 4,500 food items. The response was
tremendous. It shows what a friendly rivalry can do.
This was a positive for both schools and for the
county," Wenner said. "Last year, we collected 1,300
items through our effort at the Halloween parade."
The food items
collected filled a school bus, which was unloaded
Saturday morning at St. Paul's United Methodist
Church by nearly 40 volunteers. These folks
distributed 39 boxes of food to each of the four
food pantries in Defiance County -- St. Paul's
United Methodist, St. Mary's Catholic Church. St.
John's Lutheran Church and Temple of Praise.
The Lions Club will
continue efforts to collect food for needy families
during the annual Halloween parade set for Oct. 31.
A truck will be
placed near the State Bank building downtown where
food items can be donated and a food item will be
the price of admission at an activity area to be set
up by Defiance Regional Medical Center near the
Defiance Middle School.
