Spring Sports Tournament Schedule
BASEBALL STATE TOURNAMENTS:
WHAT: 76th Annual State Baseball Tournaments
WHEN: Thursday, Friday and Saturday
TIME/LOCATIONS: Divisions I and III will be held at
Columbus Cooper Stadium, the home of the New York Yankees Class AAA affiliate
Columbus Clippers. Semifinals at Cooper Stadium Thursday and Friday begin at 10:00 a.m.
and 1:30 p.m. Divisions II and IV will be held at Bill Davis Stadium on the campus of The
Ohio State University in Columbus. Semifinals at Bill Davis Stadium Thursday and Friday
begin at 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 or 4:00 p.m. Finals at Ohio State on Saturday are at 10:00
and 1:30, while finals at Cooper Stadium are at 11:00 and 3:00. A complete schedule is
listed on page one of this release.
ADMISSION: $6.00 per person for each game.
MEDIA CREDENTIALS: Fax requests to Bob Goldring, OHSAA
Director of Information, at 614-267-1677. Credentials will be held for pickup at each
stadium (main entrance to the stadium behind home plate at Bill Davis Stadium; Gate 2 at
Cooper Stadium). If the baseball team you are
covering wins its semifinal game, use the same credential for the championship game.
DIRECTIONS: Bill Davis Stadium is located just off of State
Route 315, directly north of the Jerome Schottenstein Center. Take the Lane Avenue Exit
off of State Route 315. Turn east onto Lane Avenue. At the first light, turn left (north)
onto Fred Taylor Drive and follow to the stadium. Cooper Stadium (1155 West Mound Street)
is located just off of I-70 on the west side of downtown Columbus. From the east, take the
Mound Street exit (98B); from the west, take the West Broad Street exit (97); then follow
the signs to the stadium. Travelers can gain access to I-70 from State Route 315.
PARKING: Parking is on a first-come, first served basis in
the public lots around the stadium.
TELEPHONES: Two lines are available on a first-come,
first-served basis at Bill Davis Stadium for quick call-backs or for filing stories using
credit card, collect or 800 calls only. To install a personal line (for play-by-play or
for other needs), contact the Ohio State Telephone Service (UNITS) at 614-292-9166. At
Cooper Stadium, one line is available in each radio booth for each schools
designated radio station doing play-by-play for credit card, collect, 800 or
call-backs only. A line will also be
available for print media members to file stories on a first-come, first-served basis for

2002 IN REVIEW: 75th Annual State Baseball Tournaments,
June 6, 7 and 8, Bill Davis Stadium, The Ohio State University, Columbus (Divisions I and
IV) and Cooper Stadium, Columbus (Divisions
II and III).
Division I: Cleveland St. Ignatius (27-3) won its first state
championship when it defeated Milford in the title game, 11-10. The Wildcats jumped out to
a 10-2 lead after two innings before holding on. Senior first baseball Neall French led
St. Ignatius 14-hit attack with two doubles, a single and four RBIs. Junior
centerfielder Kyle Rapp had three hits and two RBIs for Milford, while junior right
fielder Jacob Chalupa added two hits and two ribbies. Sophomore pitcher Brian Hoyer went
the first 5.2 innings to pick up the win, despite giving up seven earned runs.
St. Ignatius reached the finals by stopping Canton GlenOak in the semifinals, 7-5,
while Milford was a 6-3 winner for Cincinnati Anderson.
St. Ignatius advanced to this years regional finals before falling to
Perrysburg.
Division II: Runner-up four other times, including 2000 and 2001,
Tallmadge (27-5) finally won its first state title when it defeated Richmond Edison in the
championship game, 6-1. Senior pitcher Gian Testa hurled six shutout innings, giving up
three hits and striking out eight. Junior first baseman Casey Jirsa had a double and two
RBIs and junior right fielder Mike Kline also drove in two.
Tallmadge
reached the finals by defeating Defiance 1-0 in the semifinals despite collecting three
hits and striking out 14 times against Defiance junior ace Chad Billingsley. Junior Jason
Stephens also gave up just three hits for the Blue Devils, who scored the games lone
run on junior designated hitter Pat Conleys home run in the top of the seventh.
Edison was a 7-5 winner over Columbus St. Francis DeSales in the semifinals, plating two
runs in the top of the ninth to break a 5-all tie.
Tallmadge advanced to the district semifinals of this years tournament before
falling to Akron Archbishop Hoban.
Division III: Top-ranked Heath (30-2) captured its first state
championship when it stopped Elyria Catholic in the finals, 7-2. Senior catcher Matt
Norris had two hits and two RBIs and senior Barry Roe, who pitched the final three innings
to pick up a save, added a single, double and two RBIs. Senior pitcher Matt Hatfield went
the first four innings to pick up the win.
Heath stopped Cincinnati Madeira 11-1 in five innings in the semifinals, while
Elyria Catholic was a 6-1 winner over Patrick Henry.
Heath advanced to the district finals in this years tournament before losing
to Gahanna Columbus Academy.
Division IV:
Newark Catholic (27-6) won its third state championship and first since winning
back-to-back crowns in 1988 and 89 when it stopped Windham in the finals, 8-4.
Junior pitcher/second baseman Scott Lake had
two triples, a single and three RBIs for the winners, while senior first baseman Brad
Petticrew added three RBIs. Lake went the first 4.1 innings to pick up the win.
The Green Wave defeated Toledo Ottawa Hills in the semifinals, 6-5, while Windham
was a 6-1 victor over Fort Loramie.
Newark Catholic has advanced to this years state tournament and meets
Montpelier in the semifinals Thursday at Ohio State. A win advances the school to the
state finals Saturday.
2003 TOP-RANKED TEAMS (State Coaches Association Final Poll):
Division I: Milford has advanced to the state tournament and meets
Cuyahoga Falls in the semifinals Thursday at Cooper Stadium. A win advances the school to
the state finals Saturday.
Division II: Richmond Edison advanced to the regional finals
before losing to Steubenville.
Division III: St. Henry has advanced to the state tournament and
meets Youngstown Ursuline in the semifinals Friday at Cooper Stadium. A win advances the
school to the state finals Saturday.
Division IV: Cincinnati Country Day advanced to the district
finals before falling to Bradford.

FAST PITCH SOFTBALL STATE TOURNAMENTS:
WHAT: 26th Annual State Fast Pitch Softball Tournaments
WHEN: Thursday, Friday and Saturday
TIME/LOCATIONS: All four divisions will be played at
Ashland Brookside Park, with the Divisions III and II semifinals on Thursday, Divisions I
and IV on Friday and all four finals on Saturday. Game times each day are 10:00, 12:30,
3:00 and 5:30. A complete schedule is listed on page one of this release.
ADMISSION: $6.00 per person for each game. This is the
third year that the OHSAA fast pitch softball tournaments have had four divisions.
MEDIA CREDENTIALS: Contact tournament manager Donna
Williams in Ashland at 419-289-8122 (fax-419-289-6992). Credentials will be held at the
entrance to the park. If the softball team you are covering wins its semifinal game, use
the same credential for the championship game.
DIRECTIONS: Brookside park is located on the west side of
downtown Ashland off of West Main Street. Exit at State Rt. 250 off of I-71 and follow
west into downtown Ashland. Turn right (north) onto Parkside Dr. to reach the park.

2002 IN REVIEW: 25th Annual State Fast Pitch Softball
Tournaments, June 6, 7 and 8, Brookside Park, Ashland
Division I: Elyria (32-4) plated two runs in the top of the sixth
inning and held on to defeat Cincinnati Sycamore in the finals, 2-1. It was the first
state title for Elyria, which received three-hit pitching from senior Audrey Oliver.
Senior center fielder Amy Koutsopoulos had two of the Panthers six hits.
Elyria
reached the finals by stopping Hamilton in the semifinals, 2-1, as Oliver hurled a
one-hitter and struck out 12. Sycamore stopped top-ranked and defending champion Boardman
in the semifinals, 1-0 in 12 innings.
Elyria
advanced to the district finals in this years tournament before falling to North
Ridgeville.
Division II: Top ranked Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit (29-1) won its
second state championship and first since 1980 when it stopped Hebron Lakewood in the
finals, 4-0. Sophomore Lorena Floccari pitched a four-hitter for the winners and drove in
two runs.
Walsh
defeated No. 2-ranked and defending state champion Lima Bath in the semifinals, 1-0, while
Lakewood was a 2-0 winner over Lexington.
Walsh
advanced to the district finals in this years tournament before losing to Mantua
Crestwood.
Division III:
Loudonville (23-8) captured its third state championship when it defeated previously
unbeaten Springfield Kenton Ridge in the title game, 3-0 in nine innings. Freshman Jen
Haudenschild struck out 12 and senior first baseman Bobbie Atkinson drove in two runs for
the Redbirds. Kenton Ridges Molly Binz struck out 13. Loudonvilles other
titles came in 1993 and 97.
Loudonville
reached the finals by stopping Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas in the semifinals, 5-1, as
Haudenschild gave up one hit and struck out 12. Kenton Ridge was a 4-0 winner over
second-ranked West Portsmouth Portsmouth West.
Loudonville advanced to the district finals in this years tournament before losing
to Jeromesville Hillsdale.
Division IV: Third-ranked Gibsonburg (30-0) win its second
straight championship when it stopped Strasburg-Franklin in the finals, 8-0. Junior Jamie
Wonderly struck out 12 and gave up just one hit in the finals after striking out 15 and
giving up a hit in the teams 4-0 semifinal win over Covington. Senior center fielder
Sarah Taulker had two hits and two RBIs in both games and senior catcher Krissy Lotycz had
two doubles in the championship game. Strasburg-Franklin reached the finals by defeating
top-ranked North Robinson Colonel Crawford in the semifinals, 3-0.
Gibsonburg
has advanced to this years state tournament and faces Crestline or Mogadore in the
semifinals Friday at Ashland. A win advances the school to the state finals Saturday.

Division I: Boardman advanced to the district finals before losing
to Warren Howland.
Division II: LaGrange Keystone has advanced to the state
tournament and meets Springfield Kenton Ridge in the semifinals Thursday at Ashland. A win
advances the school to the state finals Sunday.
Division III: Carroll Bloom-Carroll advanced to the district
finals before losing to Mt. Gilead.
Division IV: Gibsonburg. See information above.

DOUBLE QUALIFIERS:
St. Henry (Division III in baseball, Division IV in softball) has qualified for the state
baseball and fast pitch softball tournaments. The 10 schools that have had double
qualifiers are listed below. Note that none of the nine other schools prior to 2003 have
ever gone on to win state championships in both baseball and fast pitch softball in the
same year.

BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK & FIELD STATE
TOURNAMENTS:
WHAT: 96th Annual Boys and 29th Annual Girls State Track
& Field Tournaments
WHEN/WHERE: Friday and Saturday at Dayton Welcome Stadium
(1801 Edwin Moses Blvd.)
TIME/EVENTS: The tournament has a two-day format. Running
events on Friday begin at 9:30 (Division III), 1:30 (Division II) and 4:30 (Division I),
with field events starting at 10:00 (Division II) and 1:00 (Division III). Running events
on Saturday begin at 9:30 (Division III), 1:15 (Division II) and 4:15 (Division I), with
field events starting at 9:00 (Division II) and 11:30 (Division I). A detailed schedule is
listed on page one of this release.

DIRECTIONS: Welcome Stadium is located beside the
University of Dayton Arena near campus. Take I-75 and exit at Edwin Moses Blvd., which is
just south of downtown Dayton. The arena and stadium are visible from your exit at I-75.
The address is 1801 Edwin Moses Blvd.
PARKING: Parking is on a first-come, first-served basis in
the public lots west of the stadium.
MEDIA SERVICES: Credentials will allow reporters to remain
at the interview area, located on the infield, or at the media work room, which is located
in the UD Arena. Photographers will be given access to various photo areas. Credentials
are good for both days of the tournament. Results will be available at the interview area
on the infield and at the media work room. A few telephones will be available at the media
work room for collect, credit card or 800 calls only. These are available on a first-come,
first-served basis and are to be used to transmit stories or for a few call-backs with
updates. Those who need a telephone for longer useage must contact Don Hunter at the
University of Dayton by Tuesday (Phone: 937-229-4366; Fax: 937-229-4000). Phones are to
set up in the football locker room at the UD Arena.
2002 IN REVIEW: 28th Annual State Girls Track & Field
Tournaments, June 7 and 8, Welcome Stadium, Dayton
Division I: Cleveland Heights Beaumont won its 14th state
championship to become the all-time leader in state track & field titles for boys and
girls. Cleveland East Techs boys had been tied with Beaumont with 13 titles.
Beaumont had 54 points to 45 for runner-up Elyria. Sophomore Maggie Infeld was a triple
winner for Beaumont, taking the 800, the 1600 in a tournament record time and anchoring
the winning 4x800 relay that set tournament and state records. Senior Shavonne Maclin was
a repeat winner in the 400.
Other
highlights saw Elyria junior Tianna Madison win the 100, 200, long jump and anchor the
winning 4x100 relay team; Ashland senior Beth Mallory defending her titles in the shot put
and discus, andthe Cleveland Heights 4x400 relay team setting a tournament record.
Beaumont
has qualified 10 athletes in eight events to this years state tournament.
Division II: Ottawa-Glandorf won its first state championship,
edging Granville, 31.5 to 30. The school did not have an individual champion but saw its
4x100 relay team finish second, senior Jackie Inkrott take second in the 100 hurdles and
six others placing in the top eight.
Girard
freshman Cachet Murray set state and tournament records in the semifinals of the 200 and
won titles in both the 100 and 200, while Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy senior Amy
Arnold (3200), Bellaire senior Kacie Vavrek (100 hurdles) and Upper Sandusky senior Meghan
Horn (shot put) all defended titles. Vavrek also won the 300 hurdles.
Ottawa-Glandorf
has qualified 10 athletes in six events to this years state tournament.
Division III: Minster and Gates Mills Hawken finished one-two for
the second straight year. Minster won its 10th title overall with 54 points and Hawken had
43. Titles for Minster came from sophomore Sunni Olding, who defended her title in the
1600, and the 4x800 relay team.
Other
highlights saw New Knoxville senior Ashley Arnett win three events (100 hurdles, 300
hurdles in state and tournament record tying
time and long jump); Hawken sophomore Brook Turner taking the 200, 400 and running on the
winning 4x200 (state and tournament record time) and 4x400 relay teams; Cortland Maplewood
senior Christen Clemson winning the discus with a state and tournament record, and
Spencerville senior Angela Homan defending her title in the 3200.
Minster
has qualified eight athletes in nine events to this years state tournament.
2002 IN REVIEW: 95th Annual State Boys Track & Field
Tournaments, June 1 and 2, Welcome Stadium, Dayton
Division I: Middletown won its first state championship with 61
points to top runner-up Huber Heights Wayne, which had 40. Junior Marc Johnson won the 100
and senior Darrell Hunter the 200 for the Middies, who also took first in the 4x100 relay
that set a tournament record.
Other
highlights saw Hudson junior Wesley Smith defend his championship in the 3200, Columbus
Marion-Franklin junior Kiwan Lawson defend his title in the long jump and Avon Lake senior
Mike DAndrea capture his second straight shot put title to go with his championship
in the discus.
Middletown
has qualified five athletes in five events to this years state tournament.
Division II: Milan Edison won its first state championship when it
edged Willard, 40 to 38. The tournament came
down to the final event, and the Edison clinched the crown when it won the 4x400 relay.
The schools other title came from senior Bob Kandell, who defended his championship
in the long jump.
Others
who defended titles were Bellevue senior Chad Beamer in the pole vault and Washington
Court House senior Mark Bihl in the shot put.
Milan
Edison did not qualify any athletes to this years state tournament.
Division III: Marion Pleasant won its first state championship in
track & field when it had 49 points. Columbus Grove and Cortland Maplewood tied for
second with 32 points. Senior Justin Williams took first in both the 100 and 200 for
Pleasant, and classmate Braden Freeman won the 110 hurdles.
Other
highlights saw Mt. Gilead senior Jake Haughn set state and tournament records in winning
the 3200 and Defiance Ayersville junior Jason Jackson defending his championship in the
high jump.
Pleasant has qualified
five athletes in four events to this years state tournament.

tournaments (with the top four finishers in each event in each regional qualifying for the
state tournament), lane assignments and flights for the state tournaments and a
school-by-school listing of state tournament qualifiers are currently available on the

BOYS TENNIS STATE TOURNAMENTS:
REVIEW: 84th Annual Boys State Tennis Tournaments, May 30
and 31, 2003, Stickney Tennis Center, The Ohio State University, Columbus
Division I Singles Cincinnati Walnut Hills senior Eric
Thomas captured the championship with a 6-3, 6-1 win over sophomore Tony Teufel of
Cincinnati Princeton. Thomas, who finished third last year and was part of the 2001 state
championship doubles team, defeated Cleveland St. Ignatius senior Dominic Ozanne in the
semifinals, while Teufel stopped Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin junior David Rozek.
Rozek defeated Ozanne in the third-place match.
Division II Singles Cincinnati Indian Hill junior Brian
Compton, part of the state championship doubles team last year, won the singles crown with
a 6-0, 6-3 win over junior teammate Mike McCarthy. Compton, who defeated defending champ
Jeremy Miller, a senior from Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic, in the second round,
defeated Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy sophomore Michael Beatty in the semifinals.
McCarthy upended Hunting Valley University School senior Porus Jetli in the semifinals.
Jetli defeated Beatty in the third-place match.
Division I Doubles Toledo St. Francis junior James
OConnell and sophomore Mike OConnell won the championship with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2
win over Cincinnati Princeton seniors Matt Metully and Wil Lofgren. James and his
graduated partner finished third last year, while Lofgren and his graduated partner were
also second in 2002 and Metully, competing for West Chester Lakota West, and his graduated
partner were fourth. The OConnells defeated Westerville North seniors Michael
Mickoli and Atsushi Matsui in the semifinals, while Metully and Lofgren stopped Lima
Shawnee seniors Travis Curran and Brian Rager. Curren and Rager took the third-place
match.
Division II Doubles Gahanna Columbus Academy junior Kortney
Keith and senior Vivek Venkataraman won the championship by stopping Youngstown Ursuline
seniors Brian Meek and Donald Person in the finals, 6-3, 6-4. Keith and Venkataraman
defeated Canton Central Catholic juniors Kyle Jones and Chris Jones in the semifinals,
while Meek and Person defeated Cincinnati Indian Hill juniors Britt Jamison and Wade Ward.
The Jones won the third-place match.

OHSAA TO HOST OFFICIALS
FIRST CONFERENCE: For the first time, the Ohio High School Athletic
Association will host a conference for all OHSAA contest officials. Officials First Conference 2003 will be held July 18,
19 and 20 at the Marriott Northwest Hotel in Dublin. The conference will include sessions
on leadership training, legal responsibilities, recruiting skills, conflict resolution,
mentoring, rules & mechanics, professional skill development, officiating techniques
and sportsmanship. Among the keynote speakers will be Larry Barnett, retired Major League
Baseball umpire, Jerry Markbreit, retired NFL official, plus administrators from the
National Federation of State High School Associations, the OHSAA and other state high
school athletic association offices.
As part of the conference, the 15th OHSAA Officials Hall of Fame class will be
inducted during ceremonies Saturday, July 19, at the Marriott Northwest. Inducted will be
Rhonda Funkhouser, Dover (volleyball official); Robert Guthrie Jr., Mansfield (track &
field official); Bernie Harris, Kettering (football, basketball, baseball, softball and
volleyball official); Fred Heinlen, Shaker Heights (basketball and football official);
John Howell, Shadyside (basketball official); Wendell Miller, Canal Winchester
(basketball, volleyball, softball and baseball official); Kirt Rockel, Dayton, Ky.
(wrestling official); Vern Smith, Uniontown (football, volleyball, basketball and track
& field official); Leo Stiger, Paulding (track & field official); Donis Toler Sr.,
Zanesville (basketball official); James VanDeGrift, Lebanon (basketball and track &
field official), and Thomas Venditelli, Westerville, (basketball official).

KEHRES TO BE HONORED AT OHSAA
SCHOLAR-ATHLETE BANQUET: The Ohio High School Athletic Association has
selected Mount Union Head Football Coach Larry Kehres as the recipient of the 2003 OHSAA
Ethics and Integrity Award. Kehres will receive the honor at the OHSAA Scholar-Athlete
Scholarship Banquet June 20 in Columbus. He will also address this years 40 OHSAA
scholarship recipients.
The OHSAA Ethics and Integrity Award is presented annually to an Ohioan who has
displayed outstanding traits of ethical behavior and integrity in the performance of
duties and responsibilities and is a role model for others. The award is the highest honor
the OHSAA Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Committee may bestow.
Kehres (pronounced CARE-us) recently completed his 17th season as the head coach at
Mount Union, where he led the Purple Raiders to the Division III national championship,
the seventh for the school in the past 10 years. Besides the seven national crowns, during
Kehres tenure the school has compiled a record of 192-17-3 (.912), captured 13 Ohio
Athletic Conference championships, posted 11 undefeated regular season and Kehres has been
named the Division III National Coach of the Year six times. A native of Diamond, Ohio,
Kehres is a graduate of Ravenna Southeast High School. He earned his bachelors
degree from Mount Union and a masters from Bowling Green State.
