Changing your OHSAA Officiating Permit Status

    How to change your name, address and phone number
  • NOTIFY CONNIE SCHERPF AT THE OHSAA
    Notify Connie Scherpf of any name, address or telephone number changes immediately after the change is effective. 
    NOTE: Annual renewal cards are to sent to the address the OHSAA has on file, failure to notify the OHSAA may result in not receiving the renewal card.
        
    You can notify Connie Scherpf  in one of three ways:
    1.  Email cscherpf@ohsaa.org. Include your permit number, name and the change you wish to make. 
    2. Mail the information change including your permit number and name to Connie Scherpf  at OHSAA, 4080 Roselea Place, Columbus, OH 43124
    3. Fax the information change including your permit number and name to Connie Scherpf at 614-267-1677.
    Officiating Classification Upgrade
NOTE: The promotion from one class to another class does not become effective until August 1, 2006 provided the official renews their officiating permit.
MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

1.

Applicant must be in their second year of officiating experience.
2. Class 2 applicants must be 18 years old.
3. Must receive a minimum of two favorable observation reports from a Class 1 official or a retired Class 1 official who observed the applicant's work in a schedules athletic contest.  The observing official may not be working the same contest as the applicant.
4. Must pass a closed book rules and mechanics examination with a minimum score of 80%.

All steps outlined below must be completed in the same sports season.
  • Upgrade from Class 2 to 1 or Class 3 to 2  - all sports except Girls Gymnastics
    • STEP 1: CONTACT LOCAL ASSOCIATION SECRETARY
      and obtain an application form and instructions regarding examination time, place and observation procedure.
    • STEP 2: COMPLETE AND RETURN THE UPGRADE APPLICATION
      Complete the top portion of the application and return it to the local association secretary.  The local association secretary will inform the applicant of testing and observation procedures.
    • STEP 3: TAKE OFFICIATING EXAMS
      Each applicant must take a closed book rules examination and a closed book mechanics examination (if available) - NO EXCEPTIONS. 
      Passing score is 80% on each examination.
    • STEP 4: SUCCESSFULLY PASS OBSERVATION OF OFFICIATING IN  TWO SCHEDULED ATHLETIC CONTESTS
      The observation of the applicant will be conducted according to local association standards and procedures.  Both observations must be signed by the observing official.  Observations may not be conducted by a Class 1 official working in the same athletic contest as the applicant official.
    • STEP 5: MUST RECEIVE ENDORSEMENT OF LOCAL OFFICIATING ASSOCIATION
      Local association officer must endorse the applicant has successfully completed the upgrade requirements and recommend their promotion.
  • Upgrade from Class 2 to 1  - GIRLS GYMNASTIC ONLY
    • STEP 1: CONTACT a USAG TEST ADMINISTRATOR TO TAKE UPGRADE TEST

      Follow USAG testing procedures and receive and minimum rating of 9.

    • STEP 2: OBTAIN AN OHSAA RECIPROCITY OFFICIATING APPLICATION FROM THE OHSAA
      Contact Connie Scherpf at the OHSAA office by email or phone 614-267-2502 ext. 110.
    • STEP 3: MAIL THE OHSAA OFFICIATING APPLICATION FORM, APPLICATION FEE AND A COPY OF YOUR USAG LICENSE TO THE OHSAA
      Mail the documents listed above to Connie Scherpf at OHSAA, 4080 Roselea Place, Columbus, OH 43314
    • STEP 4: RECEIVE YOUR OHSAA OFFICIATING PERMIT
      Upon verification of the above documentation, your OHSAA officiating permit, handbook and pocket calendar will be mailed to you.  If you do not recieve your permit after two weeks, contact Connie Scherpf at the OHSAA office.
    Officiating Classification Change to Class 4 - Retired
During the school year for reasons such as employment, medical, family or other hardship, an official may request to change his/her status from active to retired. 
NOTE: Application must be made two weeks prior to the opening date of the sports season (first date for interscholastic contests).
    Officials called to Active Military Duty

An official called to active military duty may withdraw from active officiating status by completing the following step

  • STEP 1: NOTIFY YOUR DISTRICT SECRETARY OR THE OHSAA

    Notify Connie Scherpf by e-mail, mail or phone at 614-267-2502 ext. 110.  Be sure to include your permit number, name, address and phone number.
    NOTE:
    During the period of military duty the official is excused from attending OHSAA meetings and completing the review examination.  In addition, the official is not required to pay registration fees and is ineligible to officiate in Ohio.
    Officials returning from Active Military Duty

An official returning from active military duty must notify the OHSAA WITHIN 30 DAYS. 

  • STEP 1: PRINT "RETURN FROM ACTIVE MILITARY DUTY" FORM

  • STEP 2: COMPLETE AND RETURN THE FORM TO THE OHSAA OFFICE
    Upon completion of the form, attach a check or money order (made payable to the OHSAA) for the registration fees, and a copy of your military separation papers to Connie Scherpf , 4080 Roselea Place, Columbus, OH 43214.
  • STEP 3: RECEIVE YOUR OHSAA OFFICIATING PERMIT
    After receipt of the above documents your OHSAA officiating permit will be mailed to you.  If you have not recieved your permit within two weeks please contact Connie Scherpf at the OHSAA office.
