Division III: For the second straight year the Division III championship went into overtime, and No. 13 Mentor Lake Catholic (13-2) prevailed with a 27-21 win over unranked Columbus St. Francis DeSales (9-6). Senior safety Mark Watson intercepted a DeSales pass in overtime, and senior running back Dan Cvelbar followed with a two-yard touchdown run to give the Cougars the title. DeSales, which finished as runners-up for the third time to go with its three state titles, led 14-0 after the first quarter but the game was knotted at 14-all after three quarters and 21-all at the end of regulation. Lake Catholic sophomore quarterback Mark Petruziello set Division III state finals records with 20 completions and 298 yards, and he misfired on just six passes and threw for two touchdowns. The Cougars are now three-for-three in state championship games after also winning titles in 1991 and 1992. Senior Matt Matteucci caught eight passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns and Watson had nine receptions, which tied the Division III state finals record, for 120 yards. Junior quarterback Dino Razzano rushed for 148 yards for DeSales.
