Division III: After finishing as runners-up in its other three state finals appearances, including 2001 and 1999, unranked Columbus Bishop Watterson (11-4) won its first state title when it stopped No. 7 Cleveland Benedictine, 28-7, at snowy Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. The win came in the coaching finale for the Eagles’ 14-year head coach Mike Golden, who announced his retirement earlier in the season. Senior Shaun Swearingen scored twice and senior quarterback Danny DeLucia threw a pair of touchdown passes to lead the Eagles. Swearingen scored the game’s first TD on a seven-yard reception, then sealed the win by returning an interception 40 yards for a score with 4:15 remaining. After Benedictine tied the score in the first quarter, senior fullback Wes Gilliland scored on a 2-yard run in the second and DeLucia threw his second scoring pass in the third quarter when he connected on a 40-yarder to senior running back Andrew Murray. Benedictine was held to 206 total yards, including a season-low 101 rushing yards by junior running back Raymond Williams, the Associated Press Division II Offensive Player of the Year. It was the first runner-up finish for the Bengals, who have won four state championships. Benedictine was a 23-17 home winner over Watterson in week five of the regular season.
