Dayton Chaminade-Julienne Fight Off Winds and Poland Seminary to Win First State Title

 

The 2011 OHSAA girls Division II state golf tournament concluded Saturday afternoon at The Ohio State University Gray Course (Par 70, 5,560 yards). After taking a 10 stroke lead on day one, Dayton Chaminade-Julienne held off a furious comeback by Poland Seminary to win its first state title with a two-day score of 710.

 

CJ was led by junior Mikaela Hadaway (80-85-165) and senior Diann Bonner (84-87-171). This marked the third consecutive state appearance for the Eagles, who finished sixth in 2009 and seventh in 2010.

 

After falling behind on day one, Poland Seminary fought wind gusts of up to 37 mph to shoot the best team score of the day (351), but it wasn�t enough to catch CJ as the Bulldogs finished with a two-day score of 713, three shy of the title. Warren John F. Kennedy (731), Lima Central Catholic (749) and Gates Mills Hawken (751) rounded out the top five.

 

Haylee Hartford (Fr., Warren John F. Kennedy) started out her high school career with an individual medalist performance, posting a 71-75-146. Columbus Wellington School�s Annie Miller and Pepper Pike Orange's Brynn FitzGerald were the co-individual runner-ups, posting a 77-76-153 and 76-77-153, respectively.

Springfield Kenton Ridge Wins First State Golf Title

 

The 2011 Ohio High School Athletic Association boys Division II state golf tournament wrapped up Saturday at NorthStar Golf Club (Par 72, 6796 yards) in Sunbury. The tournament concluded after golfers faced two days of windy conditions and cool temperatures.

 

In a tournament that was going to be decided by who managed the course conditions best, Springfield Kenton Ridge rose to the top of the field winning its first boys state golf title. The Cougars were led by sophomore Clayton Portz (82-80-162) and junior Luke Schlicher (86-80-166). Kenton Ridge wins the championship in its first state tournament appearance since 2002. Previously the Cougars� best result in a state tournament was a fourth-place finish in 1981.

 

Claiming medalist honors was Springfield Shawnee junior Clark Engle (79-75-154), who shot the low-round of 79 in a very difficult scoring day one. He concluded his tournament with a 75 in day two to finish two strokes ahead of Canton Central Catholic senior Logan Lagodich (83-73-156). Finishing as runner-up, Lagodich improved upon his fourth-place tie from a year ago. His 73 in round two was the best 18-hole score for the weekend.

Columbus Wellington School Wins First State Title

 

The 2011OHSAA boys Division III state golf tournament concluded Saturday afternoon at The Ohio State University Scarlet Course (Par 71 � 7,043 yards). Columbus Wellington School won its first state championship by 11 strokes with a two-day score of 343-331-674.

 

The Jaguars were led by juniors Jon Taylor (84-78-162) and Quinten Henricks (83-81-164). It was the school�s fourth-straight appearance at the state tournament and the title came one year after the team's previous best finish of third place in 2010.

 

The runner-up trophy was decided by a tie-breaking procedure and was awarded to Lima Central Catholic with a two-day score of 346-339-685. LCC, which was making its 19th overall appearance in the state tournament, was behind Middletown Christian by one stroke entering the second day but tied the score shooting a 339. Middletown Christian finished with a two-day score of 345-340-685 but the runner-up was awarded to the team with the best score of the team�s No. 5 golfer. It was Middletown Christian�s second state appearance (2008, 2011).

 

On the individual�s side, Gates Mills Gilmour Academy�s Andrew Bieber followed up his 2010 fourth place finish with a 2011 individual medalist score of 77-77-154. He beat last year�s state champion Ryan Troyer (Sugarcreek Garaway, 76-82-158) by four strokes.

Dublin Jerome Sweeps Division I Golf Tournaments
Celtics Boys and Girls Sweep for Second Time
 

The 2011 Ohio High School Athletic Association boys and girls Division I state golf tournament wrapped up this afternoon at The Ohio State University Golf Club in Columbus. The two-day, 36-hole tournament was the 86th annual boys and 19th annual girls tournaments.


Dublin Jerome High School swept the boys and girls Division I team championship titles for the second time in school history. The Celtics had previously accomplished the feat in 2005. Jerome is the only school to accomplish this feat in the 19 years of both a boys and girls state golf tournament.


The Jerome girls tackled the Gray Course (Par 70, 5,560 yards) by shooting 320-307-627 to best runner-up Massillon Jackson (324-317-641) by 14 strokes. The championship is the second for the Celtics in girls golf, previously winning in 2005. The Jerome girls have now won two championships in three appearances at the state golf tournament. Jackson has now finished as runner-up the past two years after falling short to Mason in the 2010 state tournament.
 

Making her first girls Division I state tournament appearance, Geneva freshman Danielle Nicholson fired a 73-70-143 to win medalist honors by three strokes. Nicholson shot four-under 31 on the back nine leading to the individual honors. Marysville senior Tess Fraser shot 74-72-146 to earn herself individual runner-up.

Dublin Jerome Sweeps Division I Golf Tournaments
Celtics Boys and Girls Sweep for Second Time
 

The 2011 Ohio High School Athletic Association boys and girls Division I state golf tournament wrapped up this afternoon at The Ohio State University Golf Club in Columbus. The two-day, 36-hole tournament was the 86th annual boys and 19th annual girls tournaments.


Dublin Jerome High School swept the boys and girls Division I team championship titles for the second time in school history. The Celtics had previously accomplished the feat in 2005. Jerome is the only school to accomplish this feat in the 19 years of both a boys and girls state golf tournament.

 

The Jerome (308-315-623) boys led after day one on the Scarlet Course (Par 71, 7,043 yards) and played well enough on day two to hold off a charging Centerville (317-309-626) for the championship. The Celtics� eighth straight state tournament appearance delivered their fourth state championship trophy (2005, 2006, 2007, 2011). Centerville finishes as runner-up for the second time in school history (2002, 2011).
 

Boys Division I featured co-medalists, as Cleveland St. Ignatius senior Beau Titsworth followed up his 2010 runner-up by firing 72-78 to finish with a 150 total. Stow-Munroe falls sophomore Ian Holt matched Titsworth�s effort by shooting 73-77-150. Senior Chad Merzbacher, from Dublin Jerome, finished one off of their pace shooting 77-74-151 to finish third.
 

Upper Arlington freshman Justin Wick hit the only hole-in-one of the tournament during day one. Wick holed-out on the fly by hitting a 6-iron on the 185 yard, par three, thirteenth.
