REVIEW: 28th Annual State Ice Hockey Tournament, March 5 and 6, 2005,
Nationwide Arena, Columbus. Lakewood St. Edward (29-10-1) expanded its lead in all-time
state hockey championships to 10 when it defeated Shaker Heights (24-8) in the finals,
2-0. It was also the school’s second straight championship and, after stopping
Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller in the semifinals 5-0, marked the second straight year the
Eagles posted shutouts in both state tournament games. The contest marked the sixth
straight year that two Cleveland area schools met for the championship.
Junior forward Jeremy Lascko scored both goals in the championship game, the first one
coming three minutes into the final period and the second one coming 2:35 later. Sophomore
goalie Everett Graves stopped all 21 Shaker shots on goal. It was the third runner-up
finish for the Raiders, who were seeking their fourth state title.
In the semifinals, five different Eagles scored goals to carry St. Edward to its win over
first-time state qualifier Moeller. Graves stopped 10 shots on goal. Shaker trailed Toledo
St. Francis 2-0 early in the first period on two goals by senior forward Adam Gaustad
before it scored the game’s next six goals en route to a 6-2 victory. Six different
Raiders scored, while senior goalie Alex Antolino stopped 24 shots on goal.
