Second Semifinal Game 2009 OHSAA Ice Hockey Championship

Toledo St. John's Jesuit Roars Past Centerville, 7-0, in Second Semifinal

Titans score four goals in third period to blow out Elks; Wilkinson notches hat trick

Game Stats: Toledo St. John's Jesuit 7, Centerville 0

COLUMBUS, Ohio In the most lopsided OHSAA ice hockey state semifinal game since 1996, Toledo St. Johns Jesuit scored four times in the third period and allowed only 15 total shots on goal to beat Centerville, 7-0, in the second OHSAA state semifinal game in Nationwide Arena.

After seeing its record dip under .500 at 6-7-2 after 15 games this season, the remarkable turn-around will see St. Johns (23-9-4) play for its second state championship Sunday when the Titans meet Hunting Valley University School (30-6-3) at 11 a.m. in Nationwide Arena.

St. Johns junior forward George Wilkinson scored once in the second period and twice in the third period to notch the 14th hat trick in state semifinal history. Titan junior goalie Christian Davis faced just 15 shots and stopped them all for the shutout. St. Johns peppered a pair of Centerville goalies with 42 shots on goal.

St. Johns also won the 2007 state title and was in the state semifinals for the 14th time, compared to four semifinal trips for Centerville.

It marked the most lopsided loss this season for Centerville (20-10-2), which was making its fourth appearance in the state semifinals and first since 1997. The Elks were also the victim in the last state semifinal game decided by seven or more goals, that coming in 1996 when they were defeated by Lakewood St. Edward, 11-2.

Four other Titans each scored once to give St. Johns their scoring total.

Wilkinsons first goal was a short-handed goal. His second came on the power play and his third was during even strength. In all, three of St. Johns goals came on the power play.
