Bishop Fenwick Outlasts Ontario for Girls Division III Soccer Title
Falcons win in double-overtime for their second OHSAA state title

COLUMBUS, Ohio Middletown Bishop Fenwick senior Meghan Blank slipped past her defender and put a crossing pass from freshman Leandra Hess into the back of the net in double-overtime to make the Falcons state champions, 3-2 over Ontario, in the 2012 OHSAA girls Division III state soccer championship game on Friday at Crew Stadium in Columbus.

Bishop Fenwick (18-1-3) put pressure on Ontario all game long with 24 shots and 12 shots on goal. Blank scored the winning goal and the first goal for the Falcons, with junior Sezcezney Lytle adding the goal in between.

Ontario (18-4-1) was on the board first in the 29th minute of the first half. Senior Taylor Elliot scored on an assist from junior Katie Earhart. The Lady Warriors second goal in the game came in minute 58 in the second half from sophomore Allie Atkinson on a corner kick that eluded Fenwick junior goalie Jenni Rossi. The goal would be the last of the offense for Ontario.

Fenwicks attack was overwhelming in the two overtimes, not allowing Ontario to record a shot in either of the extra periods.

With the title Bishop Fenwick has now claimed two championships in three trips to the final four. The Falcons previous title came in 2008.

Ontario becomes runner-up for the first time in its girls soccer history. The Lady Warriors were making their first state championship game appearance.

Warriors down Columbus DeSales, 5-0, in Division II title game

COLUMBUS, Ohio Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit dominated the 2012 OHSAA girls Division II soccer state championship game from start to finish at Crew Stadium in Columbus, defeating Columbus St. Francis DeSales 5-0 Friday evening.

The Warriors victory is the largest margin of victory in the 28 years of the girls state soccer championships. Walsh Jesuit (21-0-2) also tied the record for goals in a girls championship game. The title is the Warriors sixth, all coming since 2000. Walsh Jesuit holds the record for most girls soccer state championships.

Senior Maddy John scored two goals for the Warriors, while junior Alex Kithcart, senior Sandra Yu and senior Kennedy Payne all added one of their own. Senior Abbey Filicko recorded two assists, sophomore Juli Knapp had one assist and sophomore goalkeeper Libby Grace was a perfect two-for-two on save opportunities.

Walsh Jesuit outshot DeSales 21-2 with 13 shots on goal to two. The Warriors also had 10 corner kicks to DeSales one.

Defending girls Division II champion DeSales finishes the year at 15-8-1 and finishes as runner-up for the first time in girls soccer. The Stallions were making their 10th state tournament appearance.

The previous mark for largest margin of victory was four and came in the 2009 Division I championship game and 2003 Division II championship game.

Perrysburg Perfect in Run to Its First Girls State Soccer Title
Yellow Jackets defeat Mason 1-0 in Division I final

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Yellow Jackets from Perrysburg capped off an unblemished season with a 1-0 victory over Mason in the 2012 OHSAA girls Division I soccer state championship game on Friday at Crew Stadium in Columbus.

With the victory Perrysburg finishes with a 23-0-0 record and its first girls state soccer championship.

The lone goal of the game came in the 25th minute of the first half when Perrysburg senior Maddy Williams was fouled inside the box resulting in a penalty kick. Williams capitalized on the opportunity, proving to be the game winner.

The championship game was a well contested, physical battle between both teams. Perrysburg committed 11 fouls to Masons four. Mason held a decisive advantage in scoring opportunities, 26 shots to six, but was unable to convert in any of those chances. Perrysburg senior Chloe Buehler was very solid between the pipes converting all nine of her save opportunities.

Mason, in its first appearance in the state tournament, finishes as runner-up, with a 20-2-1 record.

Dayton Carroll Wins Division II Soccer Title for Third Straight Year
First three-peat in OHSAA boys soccer history

COLUMBUS, Ohio Dayton Carroll scored two goals in the first half and defended well against Cuyahoga Falls Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy the entire game to win its third straight OHSAA boys Division II soccer championship Saturday at Crew Stadium in Columbus.

Carrolls (19-0-4) third championship in a row marks the first time in OHSAA history a boys soccer program has won three successive championships. Only one school has done so prior in girls soccer, Clayton Northmont in 1987 through 1989. The 2012 title is the fifth overall for the Patriots, previously winning in 2011, 2010, 2008 and 1980.

CVCA (15-7-0) put together seven shot opportunities throughout the course of the game, but was only able to get one opportunity on goal.

Carroll senior Vonne Byrd was extremely active through the course of the game with an assist on the Patriots first goal and a goal of his own in the 28th minute of the first half. Senior Zach Zwiesler was credited with the assist on Byrds goal. Patriots junior John Rutan scored the first goal of the game not even two minutes after the opening kick-off.

In its ninth state tournament appearance, CVCA becomes runner-up for the fourth time. The Royals have won three state championships, their last coming in 2010.

COLUMBUS, Ohio Powell Olentangy Liberty applied offensive pressure throughout the game and came away with its first state soccer championship, 2-0, against Sylvania Southview in the 2012 OHSAA boys Division I state soccer final at Crew Stadium in Columbus on Saturday.

Liberty (22-1-0) held a decisive advantage in total shots, 16-5, against Southview. Seven of the Patriots 16 shots were on goal. Liberty was making its second overall appearance in the state tournament and the championship game. The Patriots finished as runners-up a year ago.

Scoring for the Patriots started in the first half, in the seventh minute, when senior Jared Robinson put a header off the post that deflected off a Southview defender into the goal. Later in the half, Robinson would put in a goal of his own on an assist from sophomore Anthony Denoi.
