COLUMBUS, Ohio The 2012 OHSAA girls state tennis tournament begins Friday at 9 a.m. at the newly renovated OSU Outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts (formerly the Stickney Tennis Center). Day two of the tournament will be held at Hilliard Davidson High School.

The Division I singles tournament features another highly competitive field highlighted by the 2011 singles state champion Mehvish Safdar (Jr., Cincinnati Ursuline Academy), who also won the 2010 doubles state championship. Safdar will be challenged by Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame senior Sandy Niehaus, the 2010 singles champion and 2011 singles runner-up. Other top seeds include Sylvania Northview junior Megan Miller, four-time state qualifier Lauren Golick (Sr., Westlake), and three-time state qualifier and 2011 doubles champion, Lauren Bellinger (Sr., Dublin Jerome).

Her 2011 partner, Lauren Bellinger, has qualified for the Division I singles state tournament. The 2011 runner-ups, Columbus Bishop Wattersons Lauren Ghidotti (Jr.) and Katie Shepherd (Sr.), are also back in the tournament trying to win their first state title. Other top seeds in the Div. The girls Division II singles tournament will have to go through 2011 champion Rachel Nelson (Sr., Millersburg West Holmes), who was also the 2010 runner-up. Defending Nelsons title is no easy task as other strong contenders include 2011 third-place finisher My Linh Li (Sr., Columbus St. Francis DeSales), 2011 fourth-place finisher Danielle Wolf (So., Cincinnati Country Day), 2011 doubles runner-up Danielle Buchinsky (So., Shaker Heights Laurel School), Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown junior Ariana Iranpour and Oak Harbor senior Ashley LaFountain.
