UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio – Columbus Bishop Watterson won its third Ohio High School Athletic Association state field hockey championship Saturday with a 1-0 win over Gahanna Columbus Academy at Upper Arlington High School.

The Eagles, who also won state titles in 1995 and 2005, scored off a penalty corner with 7:45 left in the first half from senior Nina Passen, who also scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 state semifinal win Friday over Cin. St. Ursula Academy.

In the final game of the regular season, Watterson lost to Academy in overtime, 1-0. There would be no overtime in the state championship game, though, thanks in part to four saves from senior goalkeeper Domini Paradiso, whose save off a penalty corner in the final minute capped the shutout.

The loss denied Academy a ninth state title.

UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio – Gahanna Columbus Academy scored two second half goals to knock off defending state champion Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown, 2-1, Friday in the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s state field hockey tournament at Upper Arlington High School.

Senior Mia Wise scored with 6:00 remaining, which would hold up as the game-winner and send the Vikings to the state championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday, where they will play for their ninth state title.

Freshman Courtney Deena scored Academy’s first goal with 27:43 remaining to tie the game after Hathaway Brown junior Chase Healey’s goal with 1:15 remaining in the first half gave the Blazers a 1-0 halftime lead.

UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio – A pair of second half goals lifted Columbus Bishop Watterson past Cincinnati St. Ursula Academy, 2-1, Friday in the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s state field hockey tournament at Upper Arlington High School.

Junior Abby Barker assisted on both Watterson goals, the first coming from junior Sara Vlahakis with 28:11 remaining, and the second from senior Nina Passen with 16:09 left.

The Eagles will face Gahanna Columbus Academy at 1 p.m. Saturday in the state championship game. The two schools met in the final game of the regular season, with Columbus Academy winning 1-0 in overtime.
