Boys Division III Recap - Gates Mills Gilmour Academy Wins Fifth Title

SUNBURY, Ohio Gates Mills Gilmour Academy claimed its fifth state golf championship and two golfers tied atop the leaderboard for the individual title at the 2010 OHSAA Boys Div. III State Golf Tournament Saturday at NorthStar Golf Resort in Sunbury.

One stroke separated Sugarcreek Garaway junior Ryan Troyer from Gilmour Academy senior Alex Andrews entering the second day of the tournament after Andrews shot an even-par 72 and Troyer was one-over at 73 Friday. The pair flipped scores Saturday with Troyer firing the 72 and Andrews carding a 73, giving both a two-day total of 145.

Per OHSAA tournament rules, the two are crowned co-champions. It marked the first time since 1999 that 36 holes werent enough to determine one champion. Troyer finished fifth as a sophomore in 2009 and fourth as a freshman in 2008, while Andrews joins a short list of 15 other golfers in Ohio history with more than one individual golf title. Andrews was the defending individual champion after winning the title in 2009.

Andrews, along with sophomore teammate Andrew Bieber, who finished fourth with a 152, led Gilmour Academy to its fifth state golf championship with a team score of 634. The closest team to Gilmour was Toledo Ottawa Hills, which won the runner-up trophy with a 656 team score.

Play was delayed 90 minutes at the beginning of the day due to a morning frost before golfers enjoyed a cloudless sky and temperatures in the low 70s for the final day of the tournament.
