		COLUMBUS, Ohio�The 2011 OHSAA ice hockey state tournament began 
		Saturday afternoon at Nationwide Arena. The first of two semifinal games 
		faced off with No. 1 ranked Toledo St. Francis deSales defeating 
		unranked Powell Olentangy Liberty, 9-4.
 
 
		After a slow start, St. Francis deSales 
		(33-4-1) imposed themselves offensively against Olentangy Liberty, 
		tallying 42 shots on goal over the three periods. Liberty goalie junior 
		Eddie Arcy was busy all afternoon, with St. Francis deSales striking 
		first with junior Ben Torchia. The goal would be Torchia�s first of 
		three on the afternoon to earn a hat-trick. Liberty answered right away 
		with a goal by freshman Chris Bergamesca. Not long after Liberty, 
		sophomore Ethan Hollingsworth scored on an assist from junior Alec 
		Vidrick to put the Patriots ahead 2-1 to close out the first period.
 
		The second period scoring began right away 
		with St. Francis tallying three unanswered goals by senior Tyler Murphy, 
		Torchia and junior Reid Kersey. Assists came from Knights� teammates 
		senior Jake Wawrzyniak, senior Jeff Fuzinski and junior Trent Streichert. 
		Liberty added its second score late in the period on a goal by senior 
		Jimmy Ruska. 
 
		The Knights dominated the scoring in the 
		third period with Torchia adding his third goal, Kersey and Murphy their 
		second, Streichert his first and senior Nate Opblinger with his first. 
		The Patriots added one last goal to their total in the period with Ruska 
		scoring his second for the afternoon. St. Francis goaltender junior 
		Thomas Kosinski made 25 saves on the afternoon. 
 
		Olentangy Liberty finishes the year 27-9-1 
		after reaching the school�s first ice hockey state semifinal. St. 
		Francis advances to play the winner of Lakewood St. Edward and Gates 
		Mills Gilmour Academy in the championship game Sunday at noon.

		COLUMBUS, Ohio�The second of two OHSAA state ice hockey semifinal 
		games was decided Saturday afternoon at Nationwide Arena. In the longest 
		state tournament game in history, the third-ranked Eagles of St. Edward 
		scored the game-winner in the fourth overtime period to defeat the 
		seventh-ranked Lancers of Gates Mills Gilmour Academy, 3-2.
 
 
		After leading 2-0 nearly the entire 
		regulation St. Edward (26-14-3) relinquished two late goals to a 
		resilient Lancers team to send the game into the first of four overtime 
		periods. The Eagles played staunch defense in the overtime periods, 
		finally breaking the deadlock on a goal by senior Clay Jarrell in the 
		fourth-minute of the fourth overtime.
 
		In the first period of regulation, St. 
		Edward had two shots find the back of the net, both coming from the 
		stick of senior Riley Egan, who was assisted by junior Alex Norton on 
		the first goal, with junior Nick Crosby and senior Danny O�Sullivan 
		helping on the second.
 
		The second period was one dominated by 
		defense for both teams as the Eagles fired 10 shots on goal against the 
		Lancers seven, none of which found their way into the net.
 
		The comeback in regulation for Gilmour began 
		with a goal by junior Joey Lencewicz on an assist from freshman James 
		Forsythe with five minutes remaining in the third period. The goal 
		brought the Lancers within one of St. Edward. Gilmour wasn�t done, 
		finding the back of the net again, with 1:32 left on the clock on a goal 
		from junior Spencer Antunez, assisted by senior Chris Deming and senior 
		Matt Grider. The goal sent the game into the first of the four overtime 
		periods.
 
		Gilmour Academy finishes its season at 
		36-8-2 after reaching the state final four, for the second time. St. 
		Edward has advanced to play in the championship game Sunday at noon 
		versus Toledo St. Francis deSales.

		COLUMBUS, Ohio � The game was played at 12 o�clock noon but everyone in 
		attendance knew it was Knight time, as top-ranked Toledo St. Francis de 
		Sales defeated third-ranked Lakewood St. Edward 2-1 in sudden-victory 
		overtime to claim the 2011 OHSAA hockey state championship Sunday at 
		Nationwide Arena.
 
 St. Francis (34-4-1) jumped out to a quick start, taking an early 1-0 
		advantage on a Ben Torchia goal 20 seconds into the game, with assists 
		recorded to Nate Opblinger and Connor Frey. St. Edward responded two 
		minutes into the second period, as Danny O�Sullivan tied the score off 
		an assist from Justin Hoyt.
 
 The remainder of regulation was a defensive struggle between the two 
		juggernauts, as overtime was required to decide the outcome. St. 
		Francis� Matt Opblinger officially put the game on ice four minutes into 
		the extra period by adamantly placing the puck into the back of the net, 
		with assists credited to Torchia and Scott Wawrzyniak
 
 The Knights arose and battled bravely to defeat St. Edward for the fifth 
		time this season in a game that was physical from the onset. The win 
		marks the first hockey state championship in St. Francis history, and 
		was its first championship game appearance since 1988.
 
 St. Edward finishes the season with a record of 26-14-4, as the Eagles 
		made their state-record 19th state championship game appearance.
