ICE HOCKEY STATE TOURNAMENT
REVIEW: 25th Annual State Tournaments, Brooklyn Recreation
Center, March 2 and 3, Bowling Green State University Ice Arena
Lakewood St. Edward (23-13-1) increased its lead in all-time state ice hockey
championships to eight when it defeated Hunting Valley University School in the finals,
5-3. Following a wild first period that saw a 3-3 tie, junior forward Jason O’Bannon
completed a hat trick 9:31 into the second period, senior defenseman Tom Levanduski scored
with less than two minutes left in the third and junior goalie Kyle Rudman stopped all 18
University School shots on goal in the final two stanzas to lead the Eagles to the win.
Sophomore forward Elliot Taxman had two of the Preppers’ three goals. It was the
first appearance in the state finals for University School, which had defeated St. Edward
in four of five regular season meetings this year. The Eagles’ other state titles
came in 1985, 1986, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1995 and 1996.
In the semifinals, senior forward Mike Spaeth scored the game’s only goal 9:22
into the second period and Rudman stopped 20 shots on goal as St. Edward stopped Findlay,
1-0. Senior forward Paul Marshall, junior defenseman Curt Kassigkeit, senior forward
Patrick Neundorfer and Taxman all scored goals and senior goalie Steve May stopped 16
shots to lead University to a 4-0 win over Bowling Green.
