OHSAA PSAs, Radio Updates and Upcoming Programming

Greetings from the Ohio High School Athletic Association. This quarterly memo summarizes the OHSAA’s communications with radio stations as the OHSAA supports local high school sports coverage, delivers public service announcements and publicizes OHSAA Radio Network programming.

New PSAs Available for Download
A new batch of audio public service announcements is available for download from the OHSAA’s PSA page at https://www.ohsaa.org/RTG/PSA. Some of the spots are produced by the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) and the OIAAA (Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association). The PSAs promote sportsmanship, participation and the mission of the OHSAA.

Previously, the new PSAs were mailed to stations on a CD in August. This year, a CD or flash drive is only available upon request. As in the past, the mailing documents will include a brief survey that stations are asked to complete and send to the NFHS. The OHSAA, NFHS and OIAAA thank stations for using the spots whenever possible!

Football Playoff Preview Shows and State Championships
The OHSAA Radio Network will broadcast all seven football state championship games December 5-7 from Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton. Network delivery instructions, program logs and broadcast crews will be posted in October at: https://www.ohsaa.org/news/radio
The network will also produce a 25-minute pregame show each week during the playoffs that stations are encouraged to use before their own playoff game broadcasts.

Thank You Affiliates!
Last year, 58 stations carried one or more football state championship broadcasts from the OHSAA Radio Network, with most of those stations having their rights fees waived throughout the playoffs. During the basketball state tournaments, 37 stations carried network programming, with a waiver for their regional and state tournament broadcast fees. Since the OHSAA Radio Network was created in 2010, a total of 90 stations have carried network programming. 2019-20 Affiliate Status
Stations that would like to opt into affiliate status with the OHSAA Radio Network for the 2019-20 school year are asked to notify Tim Stried before October 11 so that affiliate credentials can be mailed to the station in time for the playoffs. Affiliates that carry two or more football state championship games from the network get a fee waiver for their own playoff broadcasts throughout the postseason. Affiliates do not pay rights fees during the football playoffs.

Statewide Broadcasters Meetings
On August 7, the OHSAA and Ohio Association of Broadcasters co-sponsored the annual meeting for high school sports broadcasters at the OHSAA. Tommy Thrall from the Cincinnati Reds Radio Network spoke to the group. The next meeting will be held in September 2020.

Skyview Networks Deliver OHSAA Radio Network Broadcasts
Skyview Networks has partnered with the OHSAA to deliver OHSAA Radio Network broadcasts via satellite. The broadcasts through Skyview include automated relays for beginning of broadcast, local breaks, station ID and end of broadcast. An online feed is still be available for stations without a Skyview receiver available.

OHSAA Radio Network Programming
The OHSAA Radio Network delivers play-by-play broadcasts of selected state tournament contests, public service announcements, basketball pregame shows and a football playoff preview show. There is no cost to carry network programming.

  • Play-by-Play Broadcasts: The network broadcasts the football state championship games, the girls and boys basketball state tournaments, the baseball state tournament and the softball state tournament. Network broadcasts include program logs, local avails, satellite delivery for the football and basketball state championships and sub-audible tones for all broadcasts. Stations that carry network broadcasts can have their regional and state tournament broadcast rights fees waived.
  • Football and Basketball Pregame Shows: The network produces a series of football and basketball pregame shows in November, February and March that include statewide interviews, regional reports and state tournament previews. The pregame shows are 25 minutes and include two local breaks. Stations are encouraged to utilize the OHSAA pregame shows before their own pregame shows prior to tournament broadcasts.
  • Public Service Announcements: see earlier note
