Defiance Tinora Walks Off with First Baseball State Championship
Rams base hit in the bottom of seventh leads to 4-3 victory over Newark Catholic

COLUMBUS, Ohio In its fourth-straight trip to the Ohio High School Athletic Association baseball state tournament, eighth-ranked Defiance Tinora claimed its first state championship edging No. 5 Newark Catholic, 4-3, in the Division IV final Saturday morning at Huntington Park in Columbus.

Trailing by one heading into the seventh inning, Newark Catholic (20-8) scored to tie the game, 3-3, as a result of a leadoff walk, sacrifice bunt, and base hit coupled with an error. Tinora would rally in the bottom of the inning when junior E.J. Kissel and senior Reid Renollet reached after being hit by a pitch. Kissel would come around to score the game-winning run from second base on a base hit to left field by senior Clay Pittman.

Tinora (25-4) broke through for its first baseball title after falling in the state tournament semifinals for three consecutive years. The Rams won a total of 95 games in the four-year span.

Delivering the key hit in the bottom of the seventh, Pittman also picked up the victory on the mound coming on in relief in the seventh after spending the first six innings behind the plate catching. He finished the game going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Tinora jumped out to an early 2-0 in the first inning, before Newark Catholic scored in the top of the fourth on three consecutive hits, which included a leadoff double by senior Hunter Nance. The Rams would answer in the bottom of the fourth after senior Derek Drewes tripled and scored on sophomore Brevin Renollets RBI single up the middle.

Newark Catholic would add one more in the fifth, on a Nance RBI sacrifice fly scoring sophomore Mitch Lohr.

The Green Wave finished as runner-up for the third time in program history (1987, 2007, 2010), after winning the 2013 Division IV baseball state title.

Coldwater Claims its Sixth Baseball State Championship
No. 2 Cavaliers down No. 3 CHCA, 4-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio Second-ranked Coldwater jumped out to a three run lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back, defeating No. 3 Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy 4-2 in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III baseball state championship game Saturday afternoon at Huntington Park in Columbus.

The 2014 title for Coldwater was its sixth in baseball, and first since 1992. It was the 19th overall state tournament appearance for the Cavaliers (29-4), having last been to the final four in 2009.

Coldwaters first batter of the game reached on an error, before being sacrificed over. After a one out walk, senior Grant Muhlenkamp tripled to right-center driving in two runs. Sophomore Adam Klosterman would drive Muhlenkamp in, giving the Cavaliers a 3-0 lead. Coldwater would score once more in the third on a RBI sacrifice fly by senior Mitch Heyne.

Muhlenkamps contributions came not only at the plate but on the mound as well, throwing five innings to earn the win, his second of the state tournament. The right-hander picked up the victory in Coldwaters 3-2, 10-inning, semifinal win over Wheelersburg. Thursday semifinal starter, junior Derek Thobe earned Saturdays save with two innings of scoreless work.

After allowing the three runs early, CHCA senior pitcher Blake Swanger settled in, allowing only one more run and three more hits in the game, finishing with nine strikeouts. In seven innings of work, Swanger surrendered only one earned run.

CHCA (29-3) was able to plate two runs in the game, scoring in the third on two hits and an error by Coldwater, and in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Chase Murray. The senior outfielder led the Eagles on offense, going 3-for-3 with two RBI.

In its second state tournament appearance, CHCA finishes as runner-up for the first time. The Eagles had previously reached the final four in 2005.

COLUMBUS, Ohio Massillon Jackson was last in the baseball state final four in 1947, 67 years later in the schools second appearance, the 10th-ranked Polar Bears claimed their first baseball state championship defeating North Royalton, 5-1, in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I baseball final Saturday afternoon at Huntington Park in Columbus.

After defeating two-time defending champion Cincinnati Moeller, 4-2, in a semifinal on Friday, Jackson (26-5) took control of the championship game early, scoring two runs in the first inning on a hit and an error, before adding insurance runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh.

The Polar Bears were led offensively by senior leadoff hitter Kyle Mottice and senior Mike McCann, who each totaled two hits apiece. McCann also drove in a run. Bloom-Carroll Slugs Way to First Baseball State Title
No. 1 Bulldogs collect 12 hits, defeat No. 2 Jonathan Alder, 9-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio Scoring 19 runs in two state tournament games, No. 1 ranked Carroll Bloom-Carroll provided all the proof necessary for its ranking, defeating second-ranked Plain City Jonathan Alder, 9-0, in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II championship game Saturday evening at Huntington Park in Columbus.

The baseball title is the first for Bloom-Carroll after the Bulldogs fell to Wheelersburg, 5-4, in the Division III championship game a season ago.

This years state tournament had a different feel for Bloom-Carroll after winning a five-inning, 10-0, win game versus Sandusky Perkins on Friday, before putting up nine runs in the final. The Bulldogs (29-3) totaled 22 hits and 17 RBI in the two games.

In the championship game, Bloom-Carroll starting pitcher Corey Stanley only needed one run, throwing a complete game, seven inning shutout, while allowing only four hits and striking out four. The Bulldog offense was paced by senior Tyler Sorg and sophomore Seth Paszke. Both collected two hits with two RBI. Junior Chase Cattran also tallied two hits, while senior Scott Baker added a hit and two RBI.

Playing in its second-consecutive Division II championship game, Jonathan Alder (28-5) couldnt quite keep up with the fire power of Bloom-Carroll. Seniors Casey Graber, Trent Kaltenbach, and Zach Ary, along with junior Mitchell Eye collected the four Jonathan Alder hits. Eye started on the mound for the Pioneers lasting 2 1/3 innings before giving way to junior Luke Nees.

Jonathan Alder has now finished as runner-up for the second time, to go along with its two state championships.

2014 Baseball State Tournament Preview

One of the finest minor league ballparks in the country welcomes back the Ohio High School Athletic Association state baseball tournament this weekend for its 87th edition. Huntington Park, which opened in 2009 and has hosted the state tournament ever since, continues to earn accolades, including last year from the National Federation of State High School Associations.

The 2014 state tournament divisional order is IV, III, I and II. Tickets are just $8 at the gate and the stadium is not cleared between games. The OHSAA Radio Network will once again broadcast all 12 games, which can be heard at OHSAA.org and on stations around the state. Time Warner Cable will televise the state championship games on Saturday.

The state tournament begins Thursday with the Division IV semifinals when eighth-ranked Defiance Tinora (23-4) squares off against unranked Convoy Crestview (20-6). Both teams were in the state tournament last year and lost in the semifinals. Crestview beat fourth-ranked Cincinnati Country Day in the regional final, while Tinora beat 10th-ranked Hamler Patrick Henry. The other semifinal pits defending state champ and fifth-ranked Newark Catholic (19-7), which owns seven state titles, against unranked and state tournament newcomer Berlin Center Western Reserve (20-5), which beat 12th-ranked Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas in the regional final.

In Division III, Orrville (18-11) is back in the state tournament for the first time since 1976 after falling in the regional tournament the last two years. The unranked Red Riders face third-ranked Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (28-2), which defeated all seven Division I schools they faced this year. The second Div. III semifinal features second-ranked Coldwater (28-4) against defending state champion Wheelersburg (24-6). Coldwater beat No. 1-ranked St. Henry twice this season, including in the district final, and is making its 19th trip to the state tournament (only Cincinnati Elder has more with 20). Wheelersburg ended the season unranked despite winning its seventh straight district crown and 10th straight conference title. The Pirates five-straight regional championships ties the OHSAA baseball state record, held by Lima Senior (1960-64) and Tiltonsville (1931-35).

In the Division I semifinals Friday, unranked opponents Gahanna Lincoln (17-12) and North Royalton (21-7) face off in the first game. Gahanna beat No. 7 Grove City and No. 6 Olentangy Liberty in the regional tournament, while North Royalton advanced out of the regional tournament for the first time in school history. The other Div. I semifinal pits third-ranked and defending two-time defending state champion Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller (24-4) against 10th-ranked Massillon Jackson (24-5), which is back in the state tournament for the first time in 67 years after beating fourth-ranked Hudson in the regional final. Moeller has won 11 straight district championships.

The semifinals wrap up Friday afternoon and evening with Division II, beginning with second-ranked Plain City Jonathan Alder (27-4), which played in the state championship game last year, against unranked Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (17-11), which beat fifth-ranked Peninsula Woodridge in the regional final. The second Div. II semifinal will see top-ranked Bloom-Carroll (27-2), which fell in the Div. III state title game last year to Wheelersburg, against 10th-ranked Sandusky Perkins. The Perkins Pirates knocked off seventh-ranked LaGrange Keystone in the regional semifinal and won a regional final tilt against Bryan, which had eliminated defending Div. II state champ Defiance in the district tournament.
