2009 OHSAA Ice Hockey Championship Game

Preppers Perfect in Taking Home Second State Title

University School shuts out Toledo St. Johnís Jesuit, 3-0, for hockey state championship

Game Stats: Hunting Valley University School 3, Toledo St. John's Jesuit 0

COLUMBUS, Ohio Ė Sophomore forward Ian Robertson scored on a 15-yard slap shot just five seconds into the third period, and Hunting Valley University School went on to win, 3-0, over Toledo St. Johnís Jesuit in the 2009 OHSAA ice hockey state championship Sunday in Nationwide Arena.

After winning their state semifinal game in double-overtime Saturday over defending state champion Lakewood St. Edward, some questioned if the Preppers would have enough left in the tank to challenge St. Johnís, which cruised in its semifinal game, 7-0, over Centerville. But the Preppers (31-6-3) applied more pressure from the start and held the Titans (23-10-4) to just 10 total shots in the game after they had 42 yesterday.

It marks the second state championship for University School Ė their first came in 2003 Ė and caps off a season that saw the Preppers reach the stateís final weekend for the sixth time in the last eight years.

University School junior goalie Jamie Regan notched 10 saves. The Preppers got on the board with 1:30 left in the second period when senior forward Charlie Clark found the back of the net off an assist from junior forward Matt DeGulis. Afterís Robertsonís stunning goal just five seconds into the third period, it was all but over. Senior forward Pat Shedlock assisted on the goal.

University School senior forward Andy Neff sealed the win with a top shelf wrist shot from close range about three minutes later, with freshman forward Matt Whipper earning the assist.
