2014 BOYS TENNIS STATE TOURNAMENT RECAPS

Cleveland St. Ignatius captures first singles championship in school history; Sycamore claims fifth doubles championship

COLUMBUS, Ohio A hard fought, three-set doubles match between Cleveland St. Ignatius junior Nathan Griffin and Springboro senior Zach Berry ended in a victory for Griffin, winning the first Division I singles state championship in Cleveland St. Ignatius history by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Last year, Griffin advanced to the second round of the state tournament before losing, but walks away this year a champion. In the Division I singles consolation match, Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit senior Aaron Sandberg claimed third place after defeating Toledo Central Catholic senior Dugan Delp, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Sandberg finished as the Division I state singles runner-up in 2013. Delp was a 2013 qualifier for the Division I singles tournament.

Cincinnati Sycamore doubles pair Nakul Narendran (Jr.) and Mustafa Ahmad (Sr.) earned the fifth doubles championship in school history for Sycamore, winning 6-3, 6-3 over Toledo St. Johns Jesuit doubles pair Kevin Brown (Sr.) and Ryan Brown (Jr.). New Albany doubles pair Alex Kobelt (Jr.) and Charles Cash (Jr.) won 6-3, 6-0 over Mason doubles pair Nadim Boulos (Jr.) and Sean Reid (So.) to claim a third place finish for New Albany.

Cincinnati Country Day claims 2014 Division II singles and doubles state championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio Cincinnati Country Day junior Asher Hirsch captured his second consecutive Division II singles state championship and Country Day doubles pair Patrick Wildman (Sr.) and Kevin Yu (Fr.) won the Division II doubles state championship to help Country Day became the first school since 2008 (19th overall) to have singles and doubles winners in the same year.

Hirsch defeated Country Day freshman JJ Wolf, 3-6, 7-6 (5), Retired, to win the Division II singles title. It marked the 21st time in the 95 year history of the OHSAA boys tennis state tournament that a champion and runner-up have been from the same school. Last season, Hirsch defeated Cincinnati Country Days Patrick Wildman to win the Division II singles championship. Hirsch is the 27th player all-time to win two singles state championships. With Hirschs victory, Cincinnati Country Day has claimed six state singles championships, tied for second all-time with Upper Arlington and Youngstown Rayen.

Country Days Patrick Wildman and Kevin Yu defeated Gahanna Columbus Academy doubles pair Ryan Jung and Shrikar Kundur, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (3) to claim the fourth all-time state doubles championship for Country Day. 2014 Boys Tennis State Tournament Preview

The 2014 OHSAA boys state tennis tournament returns to the Outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts at The Ohio State University in Columbus on Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31. Play will begin both days at 9 a.m. with Division II singles players, followed by Division I singles players, followed by doubles teams.
The Division I singles tournament features a mix of experience and newcomers. Seven of the 16 participants return to the tournament after qualifying in 2013. Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit senior Aaron Sandberg returns after finishing as Division I singles state runner-up in 2013 and third place in 2012. He will be challenged by returning seniors Zach Berry (Springboro), Dugan Delp (Toledo Central Catholic) and Luke Tsai (Mason), returning juniors Vince Anzalone (Willoughby South) and Nathan Griffin (Cleveland St. Ignatius) and returning sophomore Joey Thomas (Massillon Jackson). Upper Arlington senior Jeffrey Melvin, a member of the 2013 OHSAA Division I doubles championship pair, looks to also capture a singles state championship which would be the seventh all-time for Upper Arlington.
The 2013 third and fourth place Division I doubles pairs return to compete in the 2014 Division I doubles tournament. Mason senior Alex Lebedev and junior Young-Jin Kang look to build off their third place finish in 2013, while Toledo St. Johns Jesuit senior Kevin Brown and junior Ryan Brown will look to capture the first boys tennis doubles championship since 1996 for St. Johns Jesuit. Of the 32 participating players in the 2014 Division I doubles state tournament, 11 return after qualifying in 2013.
The Division II singles tournament will feature 2013 Division II singles champion Asher Hirsch (junior, Cincinnati Country Day), Jacob Wareti (sophomore, Gahanna Columbus Academy), a member of the 2013 Division II doubles champion pair and five other returning Division II singles qualifiers from 2013. Wareti will face 2013 Division II singles qualifier Manickam Manickam (senior, Sandusky Perkins) in the first round with a potential quarterfinal matchup with Asher Hirsch. Other 2013 qualifiers include Garrett Gardner (senior, Poland Seminary), Joel Montgomery (senior, Worthington Christian), Mason Dragos (junior, Lexington) and Alexander Warstler (sophomore, Cincinnati Indian Hill).
The Division II doubles tournament features a mostly new field, with only seven of the 32 qualifiers returning from the 2013 Division II doubles tournament. 2012 and 2013 Division II singles runner-up Patrick Wildman (senior, Cincinnati Country Day) will look to translate his singles success into the doubles tournament as he pairs up with Cincinnati Country Day freshman, Kevin Yu. No members of the 2013 champion, runner-up, third or fourth place doubles pairs are back in 2014. While seven qualifiers return to the state tournament from 2013, only one doubles pair returns, Pepper Pike Orange senior Ron Beilinson and junior Austin Smedira.
