OHSAA Division IV Girls State Basketball Championship
Arlington Wins First Girls State Basketball Title
Red Devils down Berlin Hiland 52-37 in their first trip to the championship game

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Arlington girls nerves showed early in the first quarter, but the Red Devils settled down to outpace Berlin Hiland, 52-37, in the 2012 OHSAA Division IV girls state basketball championship game Saturday in Value City Arena at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus.

Arlington (27-1) shot an even 50-percent from the field, 17 of 34, while defensively holding Hiland to shooting 26-percent from the field.

The Red Devils led the game from tip-off to the final whistle, pushing the lead to 20, midway through the third quarter.

Leading the way for the Red Devils were sophomore Dani Heaster, who scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds. Senior Alivia Recker, senior Joy Reamsnyder and senior Amelia Recker scored 11, 11 and 10 respectively. Amelia Recker also collected 10 rebounds in the game, recording a double-double.

Despite outrebounding Arlington 34-24, Hiland could not capitalize on second-chance opportunities offensively. The Hawks were led by senior McKenzie Miller who totaled nine points and five rebounds.

The 2012 title is the first for Arlington, winning in its first state tournament appearance.

Berlin Hiland, in its 11th trip to the state tournament, finishes as the runner-up for the fourth time. Their previous runner-up finishes came in 1989, 2009 and 2010. The Hawks finish the season 19-9.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Africentric 70, Anna 66  OT

Value City Arena at The Jerome Schottenstein Center – Saturday, March 17, 2:00 p.m.

OHSAA Division III Girls State Basketball Championship
Africentric Claims Third State Title with Overtime Win over Anna
Anna comes back late to force OT, but Nubians pull away

COLUMBUS, Ohio Top-ranked and defending state champion Anna completed a pair of three-point plays in the final 44 seconds to force overtime, but 10th-ranked Columbus Africentric posted a 13-9 scoring advantage in the extra period to win the OHSAA girls basketball Division III state championship, 70-66, Saturday at Value City Arena in the Jerome Schottenstein Center.

It marks the third title for Africentric (23-4), which previously won championships in Division IV in 2009 and 2007.

Anna (27-1) outscored Africentric 18-7 in the second quarter to take a 31-25 halftime lead, but the second half went back-and-forth, with a total of 13 lead changes and seven ties by the time the game ended. At the end of regulation, Anna juniors Natalie Billing and Erica Huber both converted old fashion three-point plays to tie the game with 29 seconds left before Africentrics Kiyanna Blacks five-foot runner rolled off the rim forcing the game into overtime.

In overtime, Africentric used its speed and athleticism to get the ball in the paint to take a 68-60 lead, but the Rockets fought back once again to cut the lead to two, 68-66, with 34 seconds in the game. After an Anna foul, Africentric missed the front end of a 1-and-1 but Ayrielle Stith came up with a big offensive rebound and hit two foul shots to give the Nubians the four point win.

Black led the way for the Nubians with 27 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and two steals. Her 27-point total was just three shy of the Division III record for most points in a state championship game. Anna was led by Billing, who scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Rocket senior Ashley Frohne, who fouled out of the game in the fourth quarter, finished with 21 points and eight rebounds. Huber added 13 points.

Anna was making its fourth trip to the state tournament and owns state championships in 2011 and 1981.

Championship Game: Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown 53, Millersburg West Holmes 41

OHSAA Division II Girls State Basketball Championship
Hathaway Brown Wins Fourth State Championship
Blazers defeat West Holmes 53-41 for fourth straight title

COLUMBUS, Ohio The OHSAA girls Division II state championship trophy belongs to Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown for the fourth year in a row following the Blazers 53-41 victory over Millersburg West Holmes Saturday at Value City Arena at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus.

The 2012 championship state tournament was the sixth straight trip to Columbus for Hathaway Brown (22-5), finishing as state runner-up in 2007 and 2008 before making its current four-year championship run.

Claiming the trophy was far from easy as the Blazers climbed back from an early deficit early, to pull away in the latter stages of a well-contested championship game. Hathaway Brown junior Vanessa Smith led all scorers with 19 points, also grabbing nine rebounds. Teammate junior Nia Marshall was also key in the Blazers effort pulling down 10 rebounds while totaling nine points.

Hathaway Brown shot 55-percent from the field, while West Holmes managed just a 26.8 field goal percentage.

West Holmes was led by sophomores Emily Molnar with nine points and Laina Snyder, who totaled eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Knights finish as state runner-up for the second time in school history, after returning to the state tournament for the first time since 1995. West Holmes finishes the season with a 24-4 record.

Championship Game: Twinsburg 57, Kettering Fairmont 51

OHSAA Division I Girls State Basketball Championship
Twinsburg Wins Back-to-Back State Titles
Tigers defeat Kettering Fairmont in title game for second consecutive year

COLUMBUS, Ohio Twinsburg jumped out to a 15-3 first quarter lead and held off a determined Fairmont squad as the Tigers defeated the Firebirds, 57-51, in the 2012 OHSAA Division I girls state basketball championship game Saturday night in Value City Arena at the Jerome Schottenstein Center. It was the second consecutive year Twinsburg defeated Fairmont for the Division I girls state basketball title.

After a first quarter where they shot 14-percent from the field, the Firebirds climbed back into the game and only trailed 34-32 with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. However, that is as close as the Firebirds would get as the Tigers pulled away late.

Twinsburg (25-3) helped its cause by outrebounding Fairmont 36-23 and shooting 44.4-percent from the field, as opposed to the Firebirds 36 field goal percentage. Twinsburg becomes the 11th school in OHSAA history to record back-to-back state titles.

Leading the effort for the Tigers were junior Ashley Morrissettes 22 points and eight rebounds, senior Malina Howards 14 points and nine rebounds and senior LaShawna Gatewoods double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Firebirds were led by junior Chelsea Welchs 18 points and six rebounds and sophomore Kathryn Westbelds 15 points, 13 of which came in the first half.

Fairmont, in its third consecutive trip to the state tournament, finishes as the runner-up for the second time. The Firebirds finished the season 24-4, with two of their losses coming to Twinsburg.
