Sympathies to the family of Former OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Blair Irvin

Former OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Blair Irvin died on April 26, 2026, at the age of 96. Irvin, who resided in Westerville, served as an assistant commissioner at the OHSAA for 22 years between the 1980­81 and 2001­02 school years. He also served on the OHSAA’s Southwest District Athletic Board for nine years starting in 1970 and was a member of the OHSAA’s Board of Control in 1973 and 1974. A graduate of Beaverdale, Pa., High School, Irvin earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Miami University. He began his career in education as a teacher and coach at Covington High School in 1953, serving as head basketball, assistant football and track & field coach from 1953­58. He became the head football coach at Covington in 1958. Irvin then moved to Greenville High School in 1961 to become assistant principal and head football coach. He served as a graduate assistant football coach at Miami in 1967. A year later, Irvin returned to Covington High as principal before serving as that district’s superintendent from 1972 to 1980. Irvin received a National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Citation Award for service in 1998 and also served on the NFHS football, swimming & diving and track & field rules committees. He was elected to the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1987. Irvin is survived by his wife, Patricia, and their two daughters, Holly and Shannon, and their families.
