School Enrollment Figures

OHSAA Member School Enrollment Process Explanation

The male and female enrollments of our member schools are used to determine OHSAA governance classifications (AAA, AA, A) and the OHSAA tournament divisions for each sport.  The enrollment figures are based on the number of students in grades 9, 10 and 11 as of October 31, 2025. These numbers are provided by the Ohio Department of Education. After the enrollment numbers become final, the enrollment figures will be used to determine OHSAA tournament divisions for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years. For the OHSAA tournament sports in which competitive balance will apply, the competitive balance roster will be added to the ODE base enrollment counts prior to the determination of tournament divisions for those sports.

OHSAA Member School principals will be notified of their school's enrollment figures posted below for review on Monday, February 2. Schools that believe the ODE has miscalculated their enrollment can file an appeal with the OHSAA no later than Friday, Feburary 20, 2026 using the required APPEAL FORMFollowing the appeals, the OHSAA Board of Directors will approve the FINAL enrollment numbers and classifications. OHSAA tournament representation and division assignments will then be calculated and presented to the Board of Directors for their approval in the coming months (timeline below).

Timeline for Approval of 2026-27 & 2027-28 School Enrollment Figures (Subject to Change)

  • January 6, 2026- OHSAA requests data from the Ohio Department of Education (ODE)
  • January 9, 2026- OHSAA Office receives preliminary data. Please note:
    • The ODE simply provides the OHSAA with a final # of males and a final # of females, which is based on the business rules for enrollment counts adopted by the OHSAA Board of Directors. The OHSAA has no access to the breakdown of these final #s, nor do we see the enrollment by grade levels used to total these #'s.
    • Upon receipt of the ODE #s, the OHSAA looks at each school district to determine if there are online/non-traditional/specialty schools and/or lock-down facilities.  Students may be added or subtracted from the enrollment # based on this information.
  • January 12-30, 2026- OHSAA Office formats data, collects “special school” data (08 schools, etc.), and “adds back” online/non-traditional/specialty school students to the appropriate OHSAA member school.
  • February 2, 2026- OHSAA publishes and communicates proposed enrollments to member schools via website/electronic mail
  • February 2- February 20, 2026- Appeals period opens for schools to review/correct enrollments (3 weeks)
    • APPEAL FORM
    • The OHSAA asks all schools to review and correct their data, if necessary. If no correction is needed, no further actions is required. We appreciate notification when numbers appear to be incorrect since this is part of our data integrity system.
  • Late February/Early March 2026- OHSAA Office calculates governance classifications after accepted appeal updates
  • Mid-Late March 2026- Board of Directors approves final enrollments and classifications
    • OHSAA updates website with final enrollments and classifications (A,AA,AAA) and notifies schools
  • April 1, 2026- School administrators able to run for DAB positions based on new classifications
  • May 1-15, 2026- Referendum/DAB Election Voting
