State Semifinal #1

Upper Arlington 3, Hudson 0

WORTHINGTON, Ohio — On a cold and rainy evening, Upper Arlington persevered through adverse conditions to defeat Hudson 3-0 in the first state semifinal hosted by Thomas Worthington High School on Oct. 30.

Around halfway in the first quarter, Upper Arlington senior midfielder Grace Basil scored to give the Golden Bears a quick 1-0 lead. Basil netted her second goal with five minutes remaining in the second quarter, sending Upper Arlington into halftime with a 2-0 advantage. Senior midfielder Shelby Speas assisted both goals in the first half.

The second half saw 29 minutes of scoreless action before Speas added a goal with 53 seconds left to seal the victory for Upper Arlington.

Freshman goalie Peyton Garvey recorded five saves for the Golden Bears, while Hudson junior goalie Casey Curry stopped five of eight shots on goal.

Upper Arlington (18-2-1) will make its second appearance in the OHSAA Field Hockey Championship. The Golden Bears finished as runners-up in their only previous trip to the title game in 1990.

Hudson finished the season 16-5-0, marking its 17th semifinal appearance.

State Semifinal #2

Thomas Worthington 1, Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame 0

WORTHINGTON, Ohio — Thomas Worthington defeated Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame 3-0 through rain and cold in the second state semifinal Oct. 30 at Thomas Worthington High School.

Thomas Worthington took an early 1-0 lead when senior forward Sophia Borghese scored with 7:09 remaining in the first quarter, assisted by senior forward Keira Posey.

That goal proved to be the difference, as the rest of the match saw only four shots on goal from Thomas Worthington and none from Mount Notre Dame.

Mount Notre Dame senior goalkeeper Josie Broenner saved three of five shots on goal from the Cardinals, while a team effort from the Cougars’ defense stopped the fourth.

Thomas Worthington (19-2-1) advances to its 13th appearance in the OHSAA Field Hockey Championship and will play for its fourth consecutive state title.

Mount Notre Dame finished the season 13-8-0, marking its 13th semifinal appearance.
