State Tournament Recaps

Division II
Parma Padua Franciscan defeats Sunbury Big Walnut for Back-to-Back State Title
DAYTON, Ohio- In its sixth appearance in the OHSAA state volleyball championship game, Parma Padua Franciscan won its fifth state title, topping Sunbury Big Walnut 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-10) Saturday at the Nutter Center at Wright State University.  
Padua was led by junior Abby Leigh in kills with 16, while sophomore Ella Mihacevich with 36 assists.
The Bruins tied a state tournament record having 50 kills in a three-set match against Lake Catholic and prolonged their dominance into the finals.
Big Walnut was led by junior Machaela Podradza with seven kills and 12 assists, while junior Samantha Bickley added eight assists. The Eagles take home their third state runner-up trophy, having been to the state tournament seven times.

Division I
Cincinnati Ursuline Academy Shuts Out Cleveland St. Joseph for Sixth State Title 
DAYTON, Ohio- Cincinnati Ursuline Academy defeated Cleveland St. Joseph Academy 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-22) Saturday in the OHSAA Division I championship match at the Nutter Center at Wright State University.
Ranked number one in the final state coaches poll, Ursuline was making its 13th appearance at the state tournament and now has six titles. 
Ursuline was led by senior Maddie Taylor in kills with 12, while senior Suzanna Lang had 11 and sophomore Logan Case had 42 assists.
The Lions set a state tournament record of having 75 kills in a five-set match and continued their dominance against Saint Joseph.
Saint Joseph was led by senior Colleen Neitzel with six kills, followed by junior Molly Neitzel with five kills. After never winning a regional title prior to 2016, it marked the second year in a row the Jaguars have advanced to the state tournament.

Division IV
New Bremen comes out on top to take home first state title in school history
DAYTON, Ohio- Winning its first state championship in school history, New Bremen swept Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-20) Saturday in the OHSAA Division IV championship game at Wright State’s Nutter Center.
It is the first time in school history the Cardinals have won a state championship in any sport. Senior Paige Jones steered the Cardinals with 25 kills, setting a state tournament record for kills by an individual in a three-set match. Jones was supported by junior Abbi Thieman with 20 assists.   
Senior Katie Hiestand led the way for Aquinas with 11 kills and Angela Farolino aided with 18 assists.
Aquianas made its first state tournament appearance and took home its first state runner-up title.

Division III
Versailles Wins Five-Set Title Match for Second Champinship    
DAYTON, Ohio- In a five-set thriller, Versailles took home the Division III state championship title with a 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 21-25, 15-9) win over Coldwater Saturday in the OHSAA Division III championship game at the Nutter Center at Wright State University.
Versailles and Coldwater were member schools of the Midwest Athletic Conference.
Versailles was led by senior Danielle Winner with 25 kills, followed by junior Elizabeth Ording with 21 kills.
The Tigers have been in the state tournament six times and took home their second state championship title.
Senior Tasha Kahlig posted 19 kills for Coldwater. Sophomore Lauren Gilliland had 18 kills and senior Elena Knapke supported with 47 assists.  
The Cavaliers have been in the state tournament twice and took home their first state runner-up trophy.
