Girls Division I
New Albany Wins Division I Girls State Swimming Title
Canton, OHIO - New Albany secured its first girls state swimming title in school history Saturday at the 2021 OHSAA Girls Division I Swimming and Diving State Championship at C.T. Branin Natatorium.
 
New Albany tallied a total of 246.5 points with two first-place finishes in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:24.65) and the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.56).  Those two teams consisted of freshman Ashlyn Morr, sophomore Carly Meeting, juniors Olivia Hovorka and Ava Lachey and senior Sydney Boals.
 
Lachey and Meeting had multiple top-five finishes. Meeting placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (55.04) and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.35). Lachey placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.15). Freshman Ashlyn Morr also finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.93).
 
Mason collected eight total top five finishes for 220.5 points to finish as the state runner-up. The Comets placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.97) and came in second place in the 200-yard medley which consisted of sophomore Emma Hartman and seniors Tiana Anchrum, Emma Dalton, Reese Lugbill and Kiara Anchrum (1:41.67). Lugbill also finished third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.73).
 
One record was broken on Saturday night when Lewis Center Olentangy junior Martina Peroni finished the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:57.77. Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame’s Sarah Krunsinksi won the Division I girls one-meter diving competition with a score of 468.10.
 
Boys Division I
Cincinnati St. Xavier Wins 42nd Boys State Swimming Title
Canton, OHIO - Cincinnati St. Xavier continued its domination in boys swimming and diving when the Bombers won their 42nd state championship on Saturday at C.T. Branin Natatorium. Saturday’s victory marked St. Xavier’s 22nd consecutive state title since 1999.
 
The Bombers compiled 261.5 points and had a swimmer finish in the top five in all but two events. This included a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:03.35) and another second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.11). These relay teams consisted of freshman Thackston McMullan, juniors Logan Tobery and William Froass and seniors Owen Taylor and Nathan Wall. Senior Adam Lamping finished third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:32.65) and Wall finished third in the 100-yard backstroke (56.63).
 
Upper Arlington compiled six top-five finishes and tallied 190 points. This included a first-place finishes by senior Avery Voss in the 100-yard freestyle (44.47) and in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:21.76) which included Voss, sophomores Grant Gooding and Joe Miller and senior Hayden Jay. Sophomore Grant Gooding came in third place in the 200-yard individual medley (1:50.04) and second place in the 100-yard backstroke (55.02).
 
One record was broken on Saturday night when Toledo St. Francis De Sales’ Scotty Buff finished the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 46.59. Solon’s Dominic Roberto won the Division I boys one-meter diving competition with a score of 491.45.
 
Girls Division II
Gates Mills Hawken Wins 23rd-Consecutive Girls State Swimming Title
Canton, OHIO- Gates Mills Hawken claimed their 31st girls swimming title in school history at the 2021 Girls Division II Swimming and Diving Championship on Friday night at C.T. Branin Natatorium. This marked the Hawks’ 23rd-consecutive girls swimming championship since 1999.  Hawken finished with 17 top-five finishes compiling 387 points.
 
Hawken dominated the 200-yard individual medley with three top-five placers. Freshman Sarah Pophal placed fourth (2:08.31), junior Jess Eden finsihed first (2:02.44) and senior Sydney Bare placed second (2:05.83). Junior Tori Culotta placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.92). Hawken also placed first in the 400-yard freestyle (3:28.27) with a team of Eden, junior Maggie Mallett and seniors Ella Gilson and Chloe Katz. Katz also finished third in the 200-yard freestyle (55.02) alongside Gilson who placed fifth (1:53.27).
 
Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown finished as the state runner-up with a total of 260 points and eight top-five finishes. Mairin O’Brien placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (23.15) and second in the 100-yard freestyle (50.70). The Blazer placed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.74) with the team of  O’Brien, sophmomore Taplin Seelbach and seniors Stephanie Tropper, Ellie MacPhail. MacPhail also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.62) alongside sophomore Meredith Stewart who finished fourth (1:53.14).
 
Cincinnati Wyoming’s Grace Courtney claimed the Division II girls one-meter diving competition and set a new state tournament record with 485.80 points.
 
Boys Division II
Gates Mills Hawken Wins Fourth Boys State Swimming Title
Canton, OHIO- Gates Mills Hawking captured its fourth boys state swimming title at the 2021 Swimming and Diving State Championship at C.T. Branin Natatorium on Friday night. 2021 also marks the second time Hawken’s boys and girls swimming teams won a state championship in the same year.
 
Hawken tallied a total of 228 points with nine top-five finishes. The teams of juniors Jacob Esposito and Will Dietz, and seniors Connor Brown, Michael Butler, Alex Podrez, and Donovan Liao finished in third place in the 200-yard medley relay (1:36.42) and took first place in the 400-yard relay (3:10.32). The Hawks had two top-five finishers in the 200-yard individual medley with Podrez taking second (1:51.58) and Brown finishing fourth (1:57.16). Dietz came in fifth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:42.90. Hawken senior Angus Williams placed first in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 483 points.
 
Cincinnati Indian Hill took home the state runner-up trophy with a total of 145 points and four top-five finishes. Sophomore Gibson Holmes had two first-place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly (47.97) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:48.20). The Braves also placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:12.23) with the team of Holmes, and seniors Gabe Yin, Dan Edmonson and Will Ford. Senior Ford also finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (50.31).
