St. Ignatius Perseveres to Earn Division I State Title
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Cleveland St. Ignatius defeated Thomas Worthington 3-2 (25-17, 25-23, 17-25, 20-25, 16-14) Saturday, May 31, at Pam Evans Smith Arena at Wittenberg University, in the OHSAA Boys Volleyball Division I State Championship.
This tournament marks the first OHSAA state championship for St. Ignatius. The Wildcats were also state champions in 2017. Head Coach Dominick Adornato marks his 100th win during the tournament after coaching at St. Ignatius for five years.
The Wildcats (25-3) were led by junior Jack Ragon with 24 kills and five service aces. Junior Andrew Brobbey had 49 assists.
Thomas Worthington (22-5) dropped the first two sets, but came back to force a fifth set. This was the first OHSAA tournament appearance for the Cardinals. Thomas Worthingtwon was state champions in 1990.
Thomas Worthington was led in scoring by junior Curt Buddie and senior JT McGuire with 19 and 18 kills respectively. Junior Alex Ondo had 50 assists. The Cardinals had 14 team blocks.
Cincinnati Archbishop McNicholas Wins Back to Back State Championship
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Cincinnati Archbishop McNicholas swept Mount Vernon 3-0 (25-21, 25-4, 25-17) in the third annual OHSAA Division II state title game Saturday, May 31, at the Pam Evans Smith Arena at Wittenberg University.
Archbishop McNicholas (27-1) takes home its second straight OHSAA State Championship, having made an appearance in every OHSAA state tournament.
Rockets senior Gavin Gerhard led in scoring with 13 kills. Seniors Ethan Gundrum had 18 assists and Ben Jones had four service aces.
Mount Vernon (17-11) made its first appearance in the OHSAA state tournament. The Yellow Jackets were led in scoring by junior Zach Black and senior Hunter Thompson with 9 and 7 kills respectively. Senior Isiah Campbell had 19 kills.
