State Tournament Recaps

BOYS Division I State Tournament
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Lakewood St. Edward won its 36th wrestling state championship in school history at the 2023 OHSAA Wrestling State Tournament on Sunday night March 12th at Ohio State University’s Jerome Schottenstein Center. The Eagles won with 195.5 points and state runner-up, Perrysburg, followed behind with 152.5 points.
 
Brecksville-Broadview Heights was third (121), Massillon Perry placed fourth (107) and Wadsworth finished fifth (95). 
 
St. Edward totaled 11 state placers out of 14 weight classes. The Eagles had two state champions, four state runners-up and five top-eight finishes in the tournament. Sophomore Ethan Timar (106), freshman Karson Brown (113), won state titles for St. Edward. Junior Kade Brown (132), junior Ryan Bennett (138), Bradley Eaton (150) and sophomore Jarrel Miller (175) took home runner-up finishes for the Eagles.
 
Perrysburg sophomore Marcus Blaze won the 120-pound weight class to make him a two-time state champion. Perrysburg senior Ryan Avalos captured the 126-pound title after being a state runner-up last season at 120 pounds.
 
Olentangy Liberty senior Dylan Russo earned his third state title, including his second in a row at 215 pounds.
 
Wadsworth junior Jaxon Joy won the 132-pound weight class to claim his second state title. Dublin Coffman junior Omar Ayoub also claimed his second state title in the 138-pound championship.
 
Perrysburg senior Myles Takats followed his 165-pound state runner-up last season by winning the championship at 175 pounds. Teays Valley senior Camden McDanel won the 190-pound weight class after being state runner-up last season.
 
Dublin Coffman junior Ethan Birden won the 157 pounds wight class after being state runner-up last season at 144 pounds. Perrysburg senior Joey Blaze won his second state title at 165 pounds after winning the title last season at 144 pounds.
 
Also winning were Brecksville-Broadview Heights senior Brock Herman (144), Massillon Perry junior Aidan Fockler (285) and Cincinnati Sycamore junior Eugene Harney, who won his first state title at 150 pounds.
 
BOYS Division II State Tournament
COLUMBUS, Ohio – St. Paris Graham Local won its 24th wrestling state championship in school history at the 2023 OHSAA Wrestling State Tournament on Sunday night March 12 at Ohio State University’s Jerome Schottenstein Center. Graham won with 157 points and state runner-up Columbus St. Francis DeSales, followed behind with 120.5 points.
 
Medina Buckeye was third (83.5), Columbus Bishop Watterson placed fourth (81.5) and Wauseon finished fifth (68). 
 
Graham totaled 8 state placers out of 14 weight classes. The Falcons had two state champions, two state runners-up and four top-eight finishes in the tournament. Graham’s sophomore Brogan Tucker won the 132-pound title and junior Gunner Cramblett won the 165-pound state championship after being runner-up last season. Junior Hayden Hughes (138) and junior Eli Jacks (150) took home runner-up finishes for the Falcons.
 
DeSales senior David McClelland won the 138-pound weight class to make him a two-time state champion. DeSales junior Max Shulaw captured the 215-pound title after being a state runner-up last season. Columbus Bishop Hartley senior Dylan Newsome won the state championship in the 175-pound weight class over DeSales senior Lincon Shulaw.
 
Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary senior Bryce Skinner won the 126-pound weight class to make him a two-time state champion. Louisville senior Dominic Hoffarth won the 150-pound weight class to bring home his second state title. Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy senior Kyle Snyder took home the state title for the 190-pound weight class.
 
Junior Colyn Limbert (113) and junior Kaden King (157) brought back state titles for Buckeye.
 
Also winning were Circleville senior Trentt Fulgham (285), Copley junior Javaan Yarbrough (106) and Watterson freshman Joe Curry won the state title at 120 pounds.
 
BOYS Division III State Tournament
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Xenia Legacy Christian Academy won its third wrestling state championship in school history at the 2023 OHSAA Wrestling State Tournament on Sunday night March 12 at Ohio State University’s Jerome Schottenstein Center. Legacy Christian won with 115.5 points and state runner-up Milan Edison, followed behind with 82 points.
 
Barnesville was third (76), Archbold placed fourth (71) and Liberty Center finished fifth (57). 
 
Legacy Christian totaled six state placers out of 14 weight classes. The Falcons had one state champion, two state runners-up and three top-eight finishes in the tournament. Junior Dillon Campbell won the state title in the 126-pound weight class to make him a three-time state champ. Junior Eli Campbell (113) and senior Boede Campbell (144) took home runner-up finishes for the Falcons.
 
Edison senior Max Hermes won the 120-pound state title to make him a three-time state champion. Edison sophomore Abe Hermes won the 113-pound weight class to make him a two-time state champion.
 
Archbold junior Brodie Dominique captured the 144-pound title after being a state runner-up last season. Perry senior Brock Christian won a state title in the 132-pound weight class.
 
Delta sophomore Adam Mattin won the 106-pound state championship after being runner-up last season. Junior Ashton Homan won the 138-pound weight class for Monroeville.
 
Junior Keegan Sell (190) and senior Hunter Andel (165) brought home state titles for Garrettsville Garfield.
 
Also winning were Allen East senior Eli Criblez (285), Barnesville junior Reese Stephen (150), Keystone junior Tristan Greene (157), Liberty Center junior Xander Myers (175) and Mogadore senior Tyler Shellenbarger (215).
 
GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP

COLUMBUS, Ohio – With two champions and four placers overall among its seven competitors, Harrison captured the first OHSAA-sanctioned girls wrestling tournament held March 10-12 at Ohio State. 
The Wildcats scored 97 points to wrap up the title, with Olentangy Orange finishing with 69 to earn the runner-up trophy. Vincent Warren was third (65), Marysville (61) placed fourth (61) and Jamestown Greeneview and Lebanon tied for fifth (49). 
Leading Harrison were junior Chloe Dearwester, who took first at 105 for her third state title, and junior Raegan Briggs, who won the 125 championship after taking first at 115 a year ago. 
Warren senior Hayley Snyder took first at 110 to close her prep career as a four-time state champion as did Minerva senior Alaina Jackson, who captured the 235 title in each of her prep seasons.
Toledo Whitmer junior Savannah Isaac earned her third state title, including her second in a row at 190, and Miamisburg senior Cassia Zammit won at 130 to also leave with her third championship. 
Marysville senior Cali Leng (120) won her second state title after previously winning at 116 as a sophomore. 
Jackson sophomore Makennah Craft won her second consecutive championship at 100. 
Akron Manchester junior Jaydyn McKinney followed her 120 title last season by winning the championship at 135. 
Warren junior Kylee Tait won the 155 title after being a state runner-up last season at 140. 
Batavia Clermont Northeastern junior Jesse Foebar won the title at 145 to become a three-time state placer. 
Also winning were Casstown Miami East sophomore Kira Cole (115), Loveland freshman Elizabeth Madison (170) and Greeneview sophomore Eve Matt (140).
